Electrical Cost Specialist

Summary

The Electrical Cost Specialist supports both the front-end estimating and back-end cost management functions of electrical construction projects. The position prepares quantity takeoffs, evaluates drawings and specifications, develops and reviews cost estimates, and assists with measuring completed work against project requirements.

The position is responsible for helping ensure that project scope, labor, materials, subcontractor quotations, and other cost components are accurately identified and reflected throughout the project lifecycle. The role requires strong attention to detail, electrical construction knowledge, critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to complete detailed work within established deadlines. This combined summary reflects the cost forecasting responsibilities of the Estimator I and the takeoff, cost reconciliation, and executed-work measurement responsibilities of the Electrical Quantity Surveyor I.

Responsibilities

Electrical Quantity Surveying

· Prepare detailed electrical quantity takeoffs from construction, tender, and coordination drawings

· Review drawings, specifications, contract documents, and tender documentation to identify applicable systems, components, exclusions, and missing information

· Develop and maintain Bills of Quantities based on drawings and specifications

· Calculate electrical material, labor, and related project costs

· Review and measure executed work against project specifications and approved scope

· Support Cost Value Reconciliation and ongoing project cost analysis

· Analyze costs associated with repair, replacement, maintenance, and changes in project scope

· Review subcontractor and supplier quotations and assist with quotation comparisons and negotiations

· Identify scope discrepancies and prepare questions or requests for clarification

· Coordinate with project management, planning, procurement, finance, and other departments to obtain necessary cost and project documentation

· Assist with risk assessment, value management, and cost-control activities

· Support the preparation and coordination of shop drawings and coordination drawings

Estimating

· Prepare and review electrical estimates based on project plans and specifications

· Review project scope, specifications, and subcontractor or vendor proposals to ensure complete scope coverage

· Assist with bid leveling and validation of material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor pricing

· Support conceptual estimates, competitive bids, negotiated work, change proposals, and change orders

· Identify potential scope gaps, cost variables, and project risks and communicate them to appropriate management

· Maintain current labor and material pricing factors within estimating systems

· Participate in bid strategy discussions and collaborate with estimating, operations, business development, and area management

· Assist with vendor, subcontractor, contractor, and customer communications during the bidding process

· Help ensure estimates are accurate, complete, competitive, and submitted by established deadlines

Other

· Physical demands include long hours sitting, using a computer, standing, pulling/pushing, walking, lifting, and climbing

· Job requires intermediate computer proficiency and advanced critical thinking skills

Education and Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent required

· Associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Estimating, or a related field preferred

· Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field may be preferred depending upon the level of estimating responsibility

· 4+ years of relevant electrical construction, estimating, quantity surveying, cost analysis, or closely related experience may substitute for the preferred degree

· Electrical construction experience strongly preferred

· Experience reading electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents required

· Experience with electrical estimating, quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and scope review preferred

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office required

· Experience with estimating and drawing-review software, such as McCormick, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or CCS Candy, preferred
