The Distribution Designer prepares solutions to a wide range of technical problems by applying standard engineering practices and principles within utility and public infrastructure projects. In this role, you develop engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, cost estimates, evaluations, and studies, and may assist with higher-complexity work of the same nature. You also support data and records management, research, and project coordination while working directly with internal stakeholders and customers. Project guidelines may require thoughtful interpretation and adaptation, offering a strong opportunity to gain hands-on utility design experience while contributing to impactful, community-focused infrastructure improvements.
Responsibilities
- Perform field visits within designated territories in Washington to gather site information and validate design requirements.
- Support Project Managers with street light coordination, including design, execution, and ongoing maintenance activities.
- Perform AutoCAD drafting for electric street lighting and power distribution projects, using tools such as Map 3D 2021.
- Analyze work orders, construction packages, and related documentation to ensure accurate and complete design deliverables.
- Interpret permits, utility standards, and design requirements to develop compliant and constructible distribution designs.
- Assist with estimating and basic project analysis, including reviewing and understanding cost estimates using tools such as WinEst Pro Plus.
- Route and delegate workload to appropriate Project Managers to maintain efficient project flow and resource utilization.
- Ensure accuracy and timely completion of a high volume of design and documentation deliverables in a production-driven environment.
- Maintain consistent communication with internal teams and project stakeholders to coordinate design activities and resolve issues.
- Contribute to public improvement projects such as roadway and sidewalk enhancements, power pole relocations, right-of-way expansions, and water, gas, and electric system upgrades.
- Support data and records management, including organizing design files, drawings, and project documentation.
- Participate in research and project support activities to refine design approaches and improve processes.
Essential Skills
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, CAD Design, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Baseline AutoCAD proficiency with approximately 23 years of CAD experience at an intermediate level; familiarity with Map 3D 2021 is beneficial.
- Ability to understand and review cost estimates; familiarity with estimating tools such as WinEst Pro Plus or similar software.
- Foundational engineering knowledge in civil, electrical, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience working within utility environments, including electric, gas, water/sewer, and overhead or underground systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, engineering drawings, and permits accurately.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with project managers, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deliverables in a fast-paced, high-volume setting.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a production-driven environment.
- Ability to operate an issued motor vehicle and possess a valid Washington drivers license with a clean driving record.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with utility system design for electric, gas, or piping networks.
- Experience supporting Public Utility Districts (PUD) or similar utility organizations.
- Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) or broader infrastructure design projects.
- Background in design/drafting, particularly in electrical distribution and power distribution design.
- Ability to adapt project guidelines and standards to unique site conditions and project requirements.
- Interest in contributing to public improvement projects such as roadway and sidewalk improvements, power pole relocations, right-of-way expansions, and water and gas/electric system upgrades.
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role that combines approximately 20% field work with 80% design and drafting activities. You conduct local travel for field visits within Washington, operating an issued motor vehicle and adhering to driving requirements. The position follows a standard MondayFriday schedule, typically 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You work in a high-volume, production-driven environment focused on public improvement and utility infrastructure projects, using technologies such as AutoCAD (including Map 3D 2021) and cost-estimating software like WinEst Pro Plus. The culture emphasizes accuracy, efficiency, collaboration with project managers and internal teams, and meaningful contributions to community infrastructure enhancements.

This is a Contract position based out of Bellevue, WA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
