ABOUT OUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP

At DI, an internship isn't about sitting on the sidelines.

Our summer interns become part of the team and have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects alongside professionals in their field. You'll see how ideas move from concept to design, development, fabrication and installation—and how different disciplines come together to create something remarkable.

Throughout the summer, you'll build practical skills, learn from experienced mentors, make connections across DI and leave with meaningful experience you can take back to school and into your career.

You'll work hard, learn a lot and have some fun along the way.

DESIGN INTERN SUMMARY

As a Designer Intern , you're part of the team from Day 1.

You'll join DI's creative studio and have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects across industries like professional and collegiate sports, corporate, healthcare, cultural and museum environments, and entertainment.

You'll work alongside experienced designers as ideas take shape—helping develop concepts, explore creative solutions and communicate design intent to clients and the teams responsible for bringing those ideas to life.

This isn't an internship where you'll spend the summer working on hypothetical assignments. You'll get exposure to the realities of professional design while contributing your ideas and skills to work that's actually moving through DI.

What You May Work On

- Contribute to real client projects across DI's diverse markets and project types

- Develop concepts and creative solutions through hand sketching, digital rendering and illustration

- Participate in multiple stages of the design process, including Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documentation

- Help create presentations, drawings and other materials used to communicate ideas and design intent to clients

- Incorporate direction and feedback from Creative Directors, Project Leads and other members of the project team

- Collaborate with designers and other disciplines to refine concepts and solve creative challenges

- Participate in project meetings, critiques and design reviews

- Support studio team members as projects move from early ideas toward finished experiences

- See how design decisions ultimately translate into fabricated and installed environments

WHAT YOULL LEARN

By the end of the summer, you'll have greater exposure to:

- Designing for real clients, spaces and project requirements

- Developing ideas from early concepts into more detailed design solutions

- Communicating ideas through sketches, renderings, illustrations, presentations and documentation

- Receiving, interpreting and applying professional creative feedback

- Presenting design intent clearly to clients and internal project teams

- Designing across different industries, audiences and types of environments

- Balancing creativity with project goals, budgets, timelines and real-world constraints

- Collaborating with designers, engineers, developers, project managers and fabricators

- Understanding how a professional creative studio approaches client work

- Seeing how an idea progresses from concept through design, fabrication and installation

WHO WERE LOOKING FOR

You don't need to have professional client experience yet—that's why you're here. We're looking for students who are creative, curious and excited to turn ideas into experiences.

You'll be most successful if you bring:

- Strong conceptual thinking and an ability to communicate ideas visually

- Experience with hand sketching, digital rendering, illustration or other design visualization techniques

- Familiarity with design software and tools relevant to your area of study

- An interest in experiential, environmental, spatial or multidisciplinary design

- A willingness to explore ideas, take creative risks and iterate based on feedback

- Strong problem-solving skills and curiosity about how things are designed and built

- A collaborative mindset and interest in working across disciplines

- The ability to adapt and "go where needed" in a fast-moving creative environment

- Comfort trying something new, learning from what doesn't work and trying again

- Strong communication, organization and attention to detail

Students pursuing Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Architecture or a related field are encouraged to apply.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The Design Internship is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) summer internship based onsite at Dimensional Innovations' Kansas City-area headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas.

Summer 2027 Internship Dates: June 7th - August 6th
Application Deadline: December 31st - but the earlier the better, these internships fill quickly
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 40 hours per week
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Work Arrangement: Onsite

A portfolio or examples of your work are required to be considered for the Design Internship.

We want to see what you've experimented with, built or created. Student projects and personal projects are absolutely welcome.
