Position: Research Associate

Compensation Details:

- Econ & political Analysis 15: Salaries typically range from $65,172 to $86,898 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.
- Econ & political Analysis 16: Salaries typically range from $74,927 to $99,063 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location:

- Export Development Canada operates under a hybrid work model, with employees currently required to work from the office three days per week.
- This role can be performed from EDC’s Community Hub located in Toronto (preferred), or from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa.
- Relocation assistance is available for candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Team Overview:

Join Canada’s leading data-driven international trade research team, where your insights will help shape decisions for EDC and Canadian exporters. We are Data-driven Research, Economic Analysis and Modelling (DREAM) team, situated within the broader EDC Economics team. We have an interdisciplinary group, with econometricians, quantitative analysts, researchers, impact economists and data visualization experts. Our work informs EDC’s strategy and helps foster public policy dialogue on key issues impacting Canada’s international trade and investment flows. You’ll collaborate with senior researchers, engage with external subject matter experts, and make a real impact on Canada’s global trade strategy.

What you will be doing:

- Function as a supporting researcher for our team of seniors, Principal and Manager, across a wide variety of topics, including exports, investments, value-add, economic impact, and regional diversification. This will entail:
- Theoretical understanding and application : Through comprehensive literature reviews
- Data extraction, structuring and analysis : Including working with large datasets, cleaning and transforming datasets, statistical analysis
- Modelling : Develop and apply econometric models for pertinent trade and investment related questions
- Qualitative analysis : Interview experts within and outside EDC
- Communication : Interpret results, prepare reports, presentations for internal and external audiences

- Over time, there will be opportunities to independently take on research projects from conception to completion.
- Supporting asks from the Chief Economist and/or Deputy Chief Economists, including data extraction, analysis, building charts and PowerPoint presentations
- Assisting with ongoing data transformation projects, including embedding various macroeconomic and trade datasets into an enterprise data platform, structuring the tables, building a routine of automated checks, and making it accessible to a wider group of users through interactive dashboards.

What we are looking for:

- Research Associate Level 15/16: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in economics, public policy, mathematics or related field.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in economic research, econometric analysis or economic impact.
- Working knowledge of international trade and investment.
- Experience handling large datasets, including building extract, transform, load (ETL) pipelines, and running automated data checks.
- Experience working with large firm-level datasets.
- Experience working with international trade and investment data.
- Experience working with generative AI/Large Language Models (LLMs) to code, analyze data, generate charts/presentations.
- Exceptional communication skills, especially in translating dense or technical concepts for lay audiences.
- An appetite for learning trade data concepts, growing technical skillsets, developing creative ways to leverage LLMs across a broad range of projects.
- Proven experience helping take a quantitative research project from conception to completion.
