Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
This full-time Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality blood collection and specimen processing services in an acute care hospital environment. You apply your phlebotomy expertise to perform venipunctures and micro-collections across all age groups, support laboratory operations through accurate data entry and specimen handling, and deliver excellent customer service in a fast-paced, collaborative setting. You work closely with laboratory leadership and clinical laboratory scientists to ensure timely, safe, and accurate laboratory support for patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric patients in an inpatient hospital setting, following established safety and infection control procedures.
- Perform micro-collections on infants, including finger and heel sticks, using appropriate techniques for neonatal and pediatric patients.
- Carry out special phlebotomy procedures such as blood cultures, ensuring proper site preparation, collection, labeling, and documentation.
- Process laboratory specimens, including receiving, labeling, centrifuging, and preparing samples for analysis according to laboratory protocols.
- Enter patient and specimen data accurately into the electronic medical record and laboratory information systems using a computer input terminal.
- Use Meditech and Labcorp online tools to access, review, and verify laboratory orders, results, and related information as needed.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with clinical staff, patients, and clients to address and help resolve specimen-related concerns and issues.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients and healthcare team members, maintaining a calm, courteous, and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborate with the Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists to support daily workflow and laboratory operations.
- Follow all laboratory policies, procedures, and quality standards to ensure accurate specimen collection, handling, and documentation.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including phlebotomy carts, collection supplies, and processing stations.
- Support inpatient floor coverage by performing blood draws at the bedside and coordinating with nursing and clinical staff.
- Assist with general lab assistant duties as needed, including specimen transport, basic clerical tasks, and other support functions.
- Work rotating weekend and holiday shifts as scheduled, providing consistent coverage for the night (NOC) shift.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the laboratory.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture and micro-collection procedures such as blood cultures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
- Two years of acute care hospital laboratory experience preferred.
- One to two (12) years of experience assisting in performing laboratory assays preferred.
- At least 1 year of Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) experience in an inpatient, hospital setting.
- Ability to operate a computer input terminal and perform accurate data entry.
- Typing and word processing skills.
- Fluency in English with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with patients and healthcare staff.
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certificate.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Willingness and ability to work rotating weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work the night (NOC) shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience working as a lab assistant in an acute care hospital environment.
- Experience performing phlebotomy on diverse patient populations, including adults, pediatrics, and infants.
- Familiarity with Meditech or similar electronic medical record systems.
- Experience using Labcorp online or comparable laboratory reference tools.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a close-knit team environment.
- Interest in long-term opportunities, including potential to move into a direct-hire role.
Work Environment
This role is based in a fast-paced acute care hospital laboratory and inpatient setting. You work under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists, collaborating closely with a close-knit team. The position is full-time, typically 5 or more days per week, totaling 40 or more hours. The primary schedule is the night (NOC) shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., with rotating weekends and holiday coverage. You split your time between working on the inpatient floors performing blood draws at the bedside and working in the laboratory processing specimens. The environment requires frequent interaction with patients, nursing staff, and clinical teams, and you regularly use Meditech as the electronic medical record system and Labcorp online to look up laboratory information. The pace is dynamic, with a strong focus on accuracy, safety, and timely service. The dress code requires scrubs.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
