The Senior Project Engineer supports commercial tenant improvement construction projects by coordinating field operations, managing project documentation, and partnering closely with subcontractors and field teams. This role focuses on high-end retail, office, medical, and life science projects, offering a clear growth path into project management and exposure to specialized market niches such as biopharma, healthcare, and industrial construction.
Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day field operations and ensure effective coordination of subcontractors and trades on active project sites.
- Track, manage, and log RFIs, submittals, takeoffs, and change orders to maintain accurate and timely project documentation.
- Assist in developing, updating, and monitoring project schedules to keep work on track and aligned with project milestones.
- Coordinate with field teams to ensure work aligns with project plans, specifications, and quality standards for commercial tenant improvement projects.
- Use construction management software, such as Procore or similar platforms, to manage project documentation, communication, and workflows.
- Support procurement efforts by helping to track materials, equipment, and subcontractor scopes and ensuring timely delivery to the job site.
- Read and interpret construction plans and drawings to assist with quantity takeoffs, layout coordination, and field issue resolution.
- Maintain document control, including logging and distributing RFIs, submittals, and other project correspondence.
- Prepare and support daily reporting activities, capturing field progress, issues, and coordination items.
- Collaborate with clients and internal teams to support a customer-minded approach and maintain long-term account relationships.
- Assist in resolving field issues by applying a problem-solving mindset in dynamic and changing site conditions.
- Manage multiple tasks and priorities concurrently while supporting the project team in meeting deadlines and project goals.
Essential Skills
- At least 3+ years of commercial tenant improvement construction project experience, including office buildings, medical buildings, and life science buildings.
- Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plans and drawings, including performing quantity takeoffs.
- Hands-on experience managing RFIs, submittals, document control, scheduling, and daily reporting.
- Experience with field coordination of subcontractors and trades on active construction projects.
- Proficiency with construction management software such as Procore or similar platforms.
- Strong communication skills with field teams, clients, and project stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Demonstrated problem-solving mindset in dynamic field conditions.
- Desire for professional growth and a clear interest in eventually taking on medical construction projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on high-end retail and office building projects.
- Background in tenant improvement (TI) and commercial interior construction.
- Exposure to biopharma, healthcare, and industrial construction projects.
- Familiarity with HCAI or similar regulated healthcare construction environments.
- Experience with procurement processes, including coordination of materials and subcontractor scopes.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar design and drafting software.
- Interest in progressing from Senior Project Engineer to Assistant Project Manager and ultimately Project Manager.
- Customer-focused mindset with an appreciation for building and maintaining long-term client relationships.
Work Environment
This role is primarily based on the project site in El Segundo and follows a Monday through Friday schedule from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., totaling around 40 hours per week. Occasional weekday or Saturday work may be required to meet project demands. The position operates in an active construction environment, involving regular interaction with field crews, subcontractors, and project stakeholders. You will work with construction management software such as Procore, as well as tools for document control and scheduling, while collaborating closely with a team that values growth, professionalism, and long-term client relationships. The role is salaried and offers a structured growth path from Senior Project Engineer to Assistant Project Manager and eventually Project Manager, with exposure to specialized markets such as biopharma, healthcare, and industrial construction.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of El Segundo, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
