Job Summary

The Functional Safety Lead Engineer to lead Functional Safety activities for Kenworth and Peterbilt vehicle platforms. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and driving the execution of Functional Safety activities in compliance with ISO 26262 throughout the product lifecycle. The Functional Safety Lead Engineer serves as a Functional Safety subject matter expert, providing technical leadership for safety work products, resolving program roadblocks, supporting cross-functional implementation of safety requirements, and partnering with program teams to ensure timely delivery of Functional Safety deliverables. The role also supports continuous improvement initiatives, global Functional Safety alignment efforts, and safety case development.

Job Responsibilities

- Lead the planning and execution of Functional Safety activities by developing Functional Safety Plans (FSPs) and ensuring compliance with ISO 26262 throughout the product lifecycle.

- Provide technical leadership for the development, review, and implementation of Functional Safety work products, including Item Definition (IDEF), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Functional Safety Concept (FSC), Technical Safety Concept (TSC).

- Serve as the Functional Safety subject matter expert for safety analysis activities, including HARA, FMEA, DFA, FTA, FMEDA and other safety assessments.

- Partner with Functional Safety Managers (FSMs) to develop Development Interface Agreements (DIAs), support Safety Case development, and prepare compliance evidence for Functional Safety assessments and audits.

- Lead supplier Functional Safety engagements, including alignment meetings, technical reviews, and Functional Safety workshops to ensure supplier deliverables and implementations comply with PACCAR Functional Safety requirements and DIA commitments.

- Collaborate with Technical Program Managers (TPMs) and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure timely delivery of Functional Safety artifacts, proactively identify project risks, and remove technical and process roadblocks impacting program execution.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical field.

- 7+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years supporting Functional Safety development activities.

- Strong working experience of ISO 26262 and the automotive safety lifecycle.

- Experience leading Functional Safety work products, including IDEF, HARA, FSC, TSC, and safety requirements.

- Experience creating Functional Safety Plans and managing Functional Safety deliverables throughout a project lifecycle.

- Experience using requirements and workflow management tools such as IBM DNG (DOORS Next Generation) and EWM.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence technical direction across multiple engineering disciplines.

- Ability to travel up to 10%, including international travel.

Preferred

- Master’s degree in engineering or related technical discipline.

- Level 2 Automotive Functional Safety Professional certification or equivalent.

- Experience with commercial vehicle systems, ADAS, braking, steering, motion control, or autonomous vehicle technologies.

- Knowledge of SOTIF (ISO 21448), Automotive SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination) and Automotive Cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434).

- Advanced degree or Professional Engineer license.
