Job Summary

The Functional Safety Engineer to support Kenworth and Peterbilt vehicle platforms. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining key Functional Safety work products in accordance with ISO 26262, including Item Definition (IDEF), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), and Functional Safety Concept (FSC). The engineer will work closely with systems, software, validation, and supplier teams to identify Functional Safety impacts, support safety requirements development, and contribute to the successful execution of Functional Safety activities throughout the product development lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities

- Develop and maintain Functional Safety work products, including Item Definition (IDEF), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), and Functional Safety Concept (FSC), in compliance with ISO 26262.

- Perform impact analyses of functional specifications, architecture changes, and design updates to identify potential Functional Safety impacts.

- Support development and maintenance of Technical Safety Concepts (TSC) and associated safety requirements.

- Author and maintain Functional Safety procedures, work instructions, templates, and development guidelines.

- Collaborate with systems, software, hardware, test and supplier teams to ensure Functional Safety requirements are properly defined, implemented and tested.

- Utilize Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next Generation (DNG) to create, review, and maintain Functional Safety work products and requirements.

- Participate in Functional Safety reviews, assessments, and technical discussions.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical field.

- 3+ years of engineering experiencein automotive, commercial vehicles, aerospace, or other safety-critical industries.

- Experience developing or reviewing engineering requirements and specifications.

- Basic understanding of ISO 26262 Functional Safety concepts and work products.

- Experience using IBM Engineering Requirements Management (DNG/DOORS Next Generation) or similar requirements management tools.

- Strong analytical, technical writing, communication and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to travel up to 10%, including international travel.

Preferred

- Experience developing Item Definitions (IDEF), HARA, FSC, or related Functional Safety artifacts.

- Familiarity with systems engineering principles and automotive product development processes (ASPICE)

- Knowledge of commercial vehicles, braking, ADAS, autonomous driving, or vehicle control systems.

- Functional Safety training or ISO 26262 certification coursework.
