Phlebotomist

Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on safely collecting, processing, and managing patient specimens while supporting efficient laboratory operations in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting workflow issues, and provide courteous, clear communication to patients and clinical staff. The position also involves maintaining equipment and records, adhering to regulatory standards, and contributing to a high-quality, patient-centered experience. Responsibilities

- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, including pediatric through geriatric populations.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that orders are fully understood and correctly interpreted.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens securely for transport and follow all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
- Store specimens at appropriate temperatures, place samples in the correct collection containers or tubes, and accurately label all specimens.
- Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to ensure specimen integrity and compliance with testing requirements.
- Record equipment maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and help ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained.

Essential Skills

- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
- Proven experience performing blood draws on a wide patient population, including pediatric through geriatric patients.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draw techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Experience in specimen handling, including labeling, sample preparation, centrifugation, splitting, freezing, and storage.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in checking test requisitions and labels against orders.
- Knowledge of proper specimen packaging and transport procedures to maintain sample integrity.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following safety and regulatory protocols.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Phlebotomy certification is not required but experience in phlebotomy and clinical laboratory settings is highly valuable.
- Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or other biological sample environments.
- Familiarity with specimen management systems and workflows, including sample tracking and storage.
- Experience with pediatric phlebotomy and working with diverse age groups, from children to older adults.
- Comfort working with electronic health records or laboratory information systems; experience with Cerner is beneficial.
- Background in medical assisting or related clinical support roles is an advantage.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between multiple clinical sites as part of a float pool.

Work Environment This role is part of a float pool that supports multiple clinical and laboratory facilities across Fort Wayne and surrounding cities, including La Grange, Kendallville, Auburn, Warsaw, Huntington, and Columbia City. You will work primarily in clinical and laboratory settings that involve frequent patient interaction, specimen collection, and use of equipment such as centrifuges and laboratory information systems. Typical schedules are 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with start times generally between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and end times between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (for example, 7:00 a.m.4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.5:00 p.m.). Hours may vary slightly by location but remain within the 6:00 a.m.6:00 p.m. range. The position requires traveling between different facilities, and mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to regulatory standards, accurate specimen handling, and professional interaction with patients and healthcare teams.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
