This Electrical Engineer role focuses on leading the technical evaluation, design, and execution of solar energy projects. You will own the electrical engineering design process for solar systems, from initial concept through detailed design and implementation, while collaborating closely with project management, sales, and cross-functional engineering teams. Responsibilities
- Lead the technical electrical engineering evaluation, design, and execution of solar projects from concept through completion.
- Manage the design and review of solar system drawings, including electrical interconnection, modeling, and performance data.
- Review technical equipment specifications and conceptual/detailed designs, including analysis of load flow, voltage drop, arc flash, and integration of protective relay systems and controls.
- Prepare and review single-line diagrams, electrical block diagrams, power distribution drawings, and instrumentation plans.
- Assess structural considerations and interconnection issues that may affect project design and implementation.
- Coordinate various engineering-related activities such as studies, surveys, and technical evaluations to support project decisions.
- Review engineering work to ensure compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, safety practices, technical specifications, and contractual requirements.
- Review technical portions of RFPs and contract documents to ensure accurate and feasible engineering scope.
- Conduct site visits to determine optimal system design, layout, and point of interconnection (POI).
- Act as a liaison with Project Management regarding engineering progress, quality, and scope issues, and interface with customers on technical questions and concerns.
- Support the preparation of sales proposals, including technical input for quoting, system design, and follow-up on opportunities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, including mechanical and civil engineers, to deliver integrated solar solutions.
- Work with minimal oversight, taking ownership of assigned projects and driving them to completion.
- Travel as needed to project sites and customer locations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical design; solar design experience is preferred but not strictly required.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical and solar system design (AutoCAD experience is required).
- Ability to understand and apply solar design tools and concepts, including Helioscope and PVsyst.
- Solid knowledge of project management principles and the various aspects involved in delivering engineering projects.
- Demonstrated critical and innovative thinking with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently with minimal oversight and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with project management, customers, and internal stakeholders.
- Technical savvy in electrical engineering and design, with the ability to learn and apply solar industry concepts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution may also be considered with strong electrical design experience.
- NABCEP Design Specialist Certification is preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical codes, including the National Electrical Code (NEC), and relevant fire codes.
- Experience working with various solar panels and inverters.
- Experience preparing complete electrical engineering design packages for energy or solar projects.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and informal culture with a strong emphasis on innovation.
- Willingness to think outside the box, challenge existing approaches, and encourage others to do the same.
- Interest in a role where day-to-day responsibilities can vary and evolve as the organization grows.

This role is based in a Chicago office located in the Bucktown neighborhood along the river, within a fast-growing energy-focused organization that provides solar panel and LED solutions for retail, industrial, and consumer applications. The office houses multiple subsidiary teams in the same location, fostering strong collaboration across projects and disciplines. You will work closely with a small, tight-knit engineering group that includes mechanical and civil engineers, and you will be the dedicated electrical engineer for this position. The culture is energetic and social, with a family feel and a strong emphasis on teamwork and mutual support. Team members frequently participate in company-wide happy hours, seasonal BBQs by the river, and informal gatherings after work. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. will look to obtain this ASAP
