We are looking for a Software Architect, Real-Time and Embedded Systems. This position will be based at our location in Wendell, North Carolina.

The Software Architect will lead the design and evolution of embedded software solutions used in protection, automation, monitoring, and communication systems for electrical power networks. In this role, you will drive architectural decisions across application software, communication frameworks, protocol stacks, runtime environments, operating systems, and embedded hardware platforms. You will work closely with software developers, system architects, protection experts, communication specialists, and product owners to deliver high-performance, reliable solutions for critical infrastructure applications.

Depending on organizational needs and your area of expertise, you may contribute to protection applications, communication technologies, protocol implementations, platform services, or shared system infrastructure. This role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership, architectural governance, and long-term platform ownership. You will help establish consistent engineering practices and promote scalable, reusable, and maintainable software solutions across globally distributed development teams.

You’ll make a difference by:

- Defining and maintaining architecture for embedded software components, subsystems, application software, communication services, operating systems, hardware interfaces, protocol stacks, runtime services, and platform infrastructure.
- Designing software solutions that meet real-time, reliability, cybersecurity, performance, verification, and product quality requirements for critical infrastructure applications.
- Guiding technical decisions, architectural trade-offs, platform evolution, and software reuse across long-lived product platforms and technology domains.
- Partnering with product owners, system architects, protection experts, communication specialists, and development teams to translate product requirements and technology strategies into scalable software solutions.
- Supporting system integration, verification, performance optimization, product release activities, and engineering practices that improve software quality, automation, and development efficiency.
- Mentoring engineers, promoting knowledge sharing, and providing clear architectural direction across protection, communication, application, and embedded platform teams.
- Collaborating with international R&D organizations and cross-functional stakeholders.

You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience with the following: Developing software for embedded, industrial, real-time, or other technical systems.
- Programming in C++, preferably C++17 or C++20.
- Software architecture, object-oriented design, software design patterns, and modern development practices.
- Embedded operating systems including embedded Linux, hardware abstraction layers, and system-level debugging.
- Real-time systems, concurrency, resource management, and deterministic software execution.

- 3–5 years of experience with the following: Evaluating architectural alternatives and making technical trade-offs involving performance, reliability, maintainability, security, and delivery needs.
- Designing maintainable and scalable software architectures.
- Analytical communication and problem-solving across multidisciplinary and globally distributed engineering organizations.
- Cybersecurity principles and secure software design for critical infrastructure.

- Ability to travel internationally for initial training.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Embedded Linux, RTOS, or real-time embedded systems.
- Software architecture, design patterns, and modular platform development.
- Industrial communication protocols and networking, including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 60870-5-104.
- Cybersecurity standards, including IEC 62443, RED, and CRA.
- Protection and control systems, power system automation, digital substations, multi-core architectures, concurrency, performance optimization, CI/CD, automated testing, static analysis, software quality practices, requirements engineering, systems engineering, and verification and validation processes.

The pay range for this position is $102,459 - $175,644 annually with a target incentive of 10% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
