Driver (8452)

Under the direction of the Family Store Manager, drives Salvation Army owned vehicle loading and unloading routine pickups and/or deliveries of material, donated or otherwise; to serve production needs of the store and/ or general operation of corps.

Key Responsibilities:

Warehouse Responsibilities (30%)

- Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brack, etc. according to the category and condition; selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures.

- Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage or discarding for disposal.

- Prepares non-suitable clothes for the baler.

- Sorting Room Orderliness and Cleanliness Responsibilities (30%)

- Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas.

- Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.

- Places and arranges items in the store as directed.

Driving Responsibilities (30%)

- Drives Salvation Army truck along scheduled route to pick-up donations and/or delivery merchandise to customers.

- Reviews scheduled pick-ups to ensure they are scheduled for the correct day of the week and geographical location.

- Organizes scheduled pick-ups by most direct routes to save time and fuel consumption.

- Drives to the dump and metal recycling center to dispose of non-useable donations and other trash items.

- Drives carefully and observes/complies with all traffic signs and road/weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers.

- Parks vehicle in a safe and clearly marked parking space; locks vehicle doors when vehicle is not in use.

- Lifts and stacks donations in the truck, and unloads/loads truck.

- Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.

- Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.

- Places and arranges furniture, appliances, books or other heavy items in the store as directed.

- Inpects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.

Vehicle Maintenance Responsibilities (10%)

- Ensures the truck meets the scheduled maintenance and performs operators maintenance in accordance with established standards.

- Fuels vehicle in accordance with state gasoline regulations and The Salvation Army standards.

- Logs all mileage on standard forms; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.

Other Responsibilities:

- Picks up trash and debris surrounding the grounds as requested.

- Assists customers in carrying purchased/ donated items in/out of the store.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to meet attendance requirements.

- Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.

- Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.

- Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.

- Ability to drive a box truck safely and in compliance with laws, policies, and regulations.

- Duties require frequent periods of physical mobility including but not limited to standing, walking, climbing, bending, squatting, and lifting. Physical duties may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of sitting.

- Extensive amount of physical effort required associated with lifting, moving, and carrying heavy objects (more than 50 lbs.) frequently.

Working Conditions:

- Work requires driving a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

- High school diploma or G.E.D,

AND

- Prior experience driving a box truck

AND

- Any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Certifications:

- Valid State Drivers License
