Vision Engineer

Job Title: Vision Engineer Job Description
The Vision Engineer supports a wide range of robotics and machine vision projects, from small system modifications to large-scale automation installations. You will work with state-of-the-art vision technologies, including smart camera and PC-based vision systems, to deliver error proofing, bin picking, vision-guided, and paint measurement solutions. After initial training, you will independently develop, integrate, and install systems, traveling across North America to support customer projects while collaborating closely with a cohesive engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Program, troubleshoot, and support industrial robotic systems and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Assist with the integration of machine vision systems, including smart camera and PC-based solutions, into robotic and automation applications.
- Support installation, commissioning, testing, and startup activities at customer facilities, ensuring systems operate to specification.
- Work directly with customers to diagnose technical issues, provide timely support, and deliver effective solutions.
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams across robotics, programming, paint, and flexible manufacturing environments to achieve project goals.
- Participate in project planning, documentation, system validation, and problem resolution throughout the project lifecycle.
- Travel to customer sites throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico as required for installation and support activities.
- Represent the organization professionally at customer locations while building strong, long-term relationships.
- Continuously learn and apply new technologies, systems, and industry applications to improve project outcomes.
- Take a hands-on role in mounting cameras and other equipment during system installs and modifications.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience working with robotics or machine vision systems in the field.
- At least 2 years of experience working with automation systems.
- At least 2 years of mechanical skills and hands-on experience with equipment installation and modification.
- Experience with industrial robotic platforms, such as FANUC robots.
- Experience with machine vision systems and automation solutions.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to work hands-on with cameras, sensors, and related hardware.
- Ability to travel up to 50% of the time for project installations and support.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues in the field.
- Effective communication skills for working directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Ability to work independently after initial training and adapt to different project needs and environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelors degree in a technical field, ideally in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
- Previous machine vision experience, including integration and troubleshooting of vision systems.
- Experience with vision system platforms such as Keyence or similar technologies.
- Experience working on projects ranging from small system modifications to large-scale installations.
- Natural curiosity and a proactive approach to learning new technologies and applications.
- Interest in tinkering, experimenting, and hands-on problem solving in lab and field environments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a cohesive engineering group and across multiple disciplines.
Work Environment
The role is based within a dedicated vision engineering group of approximately ten engineers who work both in a vision lab and onsite at customer facilities. Project timelines typically range from 12 to 16 weeks from purchase order to installation, with larger or more complex projects extending up to 20 weeks. Engineers develop and build systems in-house and then travel for installation, usually in two-week blocks with the ability to return home on weekends; individual install trips rarely extend beyond four weeks. The environment is hands-on and dynamic, suited to individuals who enjoy being in the lab and in the field rather than working exclusively at a desk. You will work with smart camera-based and PC-based vision systems, custom vision software, industrial robots, and a variety of automation equipment in automotive and non-automotive applications. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
