Job Title: System Safety Engineer II Job Description
The System Safety Engineer II supports the development and execution of MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs for complex engineering systems. This role focuses on identifying, analyzing, and mitigating hazards, ensuring safety requirements are properly defined, implemented, and verified without compromising critical system performance. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders to deliver thorough safety analyses, documentation, and approvals throughout the program lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation of one or more MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs across assigned projects.
- Perform MIL-STD-882 system safety program tasks and analyses, including management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400).
- Support analysis of engineering hardware, electrical drawings, and schematics to assess fault tolerance, identify latent hazards, and verify compliance with safety requirements.
- Review and work with test procedures and tactical operating and maintenance procedures to ensure appropriate administrative safety controls are in place.
- Collaborate with integrated product teams and functional lines to eliminate hazards or implement effective safety controls throughout the system design and operation.
- Provide creative, engineering-based solutions that maximize safety functionality while maintaining critical system performance.
- Assist in designing concise, testable safety requirements and perform safety analysis of existing requirements to validate adequacy and completeness.
- Support System Safety Program and design analyses, applying hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies to identify and mitigate risks.
- Collaborate with other engineering and technical disciplines during program execution to ensure safety considerations are integrated into all phases of development and testing.
- Interface with key stakeholders, including customers, program offices, subcontractors, and vendors, to communicate safety requirements, findings, and recommendations.
- Assist in the preparation of Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for customer review and approval.
- Contribute to technical reviews by briefing the safety status of the program and supporting the safety approval process.
- Review and interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and applicable military standards to ensure alignment with system safety objectives.
- Assist in preparing internal and customer-facing reports describing safety analyses, hazard assessments, and risk mitigation activities relevant to the System Safety Program.
- Support activities required to obtain necessary clearances, with the ability to begin work prior to clearance completion as permitted.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience working with MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs.
- Proficiency in performing MIL-STD-882 system safety tasks, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification activities.
- Ability to analyze engineering hardware, electrical drawings, and schematics for fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirements compliance.
- Experience with safety requirements development, including defining concise, testable safety requirements.
- Strong background in hazard analysis techniques and methodologies.
- Practical knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and their application to complex systems.
- Ability to review and interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards from a system safety perspective.
- Capability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders on safety-related issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing safety reports, briefs, and technical documentation.
- Ability to obtain the appropriate security clearance as required for program work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Any relevant coursework, training, or certifications in system safety, reliability engineering, or risk management.
Work Environment
You will work in a structured engineering environment focused on developing and supporting safety-critical systems that adhere to MIL-STD-882E and other relevant military standards. The role involves regular collaboration with integrated product teams, participation in technical reviews, and interaction with external stakeholders such as customers and subcontractors. Work typically includes reviewing technical documentation, analyzing hardware and electrical schematics, and preparing detailed safety reports and briefings. You may begin in an uncleared status while undergoing the process to obtain the required security clearance. This is a Contract position based out of Tucson, AZ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $80.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
