This phlebotomist position focuses on accurately and compassionately collecting blood specimens via venipuncture and capillary procedures for patients ranging from infants to geriatric individuals in a womens care clinic. The role ensures specimen integrity by strictly following laboratory procedures for collection, handling, and processing, while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, confidentiality, and customer service. You will support quality patient care by serving as a key liaison between the laboratory and its customers and by contributing to a positive, service-oriented environment with strong opportunities for internal growth and career development.
Responsibilities
- Perform accurate venipuncture and capillary blood collections with minimal patient discomfort for a patient population that includes infants through geriatric individuals.
- Handle, label, and process blood and other specimens precisely according to established laboratory procedures to ensure specimen integrity.
- Correctly identify patients and verify patient information prior to collection, ensuring all specimens are properly and clearly labeled.
- Select and use the appropriate tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperatures for each test type.
- Determine and follow proper priority for specimen collection, including stat, urgent, and routine orders.
- Follow established guidelines for missed draws, recollects, and difficult venipuncture situations, documenting and communicating as required.
- Use job knowledge, judgment, and problem-solving skills to address issues related to specimen collection, processing, and test requirements.
- Utilize laboratory resources and reference materials to ensure proper collection and processing of requested tests.
- Respond to inquiries regarding test information and basic customer-related issues in a professional and helpful manner.
- Adhere to all safety, infection control, and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines during all collection and processing activities.
- Follow all compliance policies and procedures, including privacy and security standards related to patient information.
- Understand and comply with all HIPAA guidelines, maintaining strict confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Participate in departmental quality assurance and quality control programs to support continuous improvement.
- Participate in laboratory training programs, staying current with policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Perform procedures efficiently and in a timely manner, appropriately prioritizing tasks to meet workload demands.
- Use supplies responsibly to minimize waste while maintaining quality standards.
- Operate laboratory and clinic equipment, such as centrifuges, telephones, computer systems, and manual pipettes, to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Use unstructured time constructively by assisting with related tasks, organizing work areas, and supporting team needs.
- Promote a service-oriented relationship with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory customers to ensure quality patient care.
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of all patient and client information at all times.
- Support and contribute to a positive work environment through professional conduct, teamwork, and effective communication.
- Function as a liaison between the laboratory and its customers, ensuring clear communication and timely resolution of issues.
- Communicate effectively in written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer-based formats with colleagues and customers.
- Access PHI only when required to fulfill job duties and apply all reasonable safeguards to protect patient information.
- Perform miscellaneous and assigned duties within designated time frames, demonstrating reliability and accountability.
- Promote quality patient and client relations by serving as a professional role model and adhering to all laboratory policies and regulations.
Essential Skills
- Proven ability to perform accurate venipuncture and capillary blood collection with minimal patient discomfort.
- Experience in specimen collection and/or processing, with a minimum of training or hands-on experience in these areas.
- Ability to correctly identify patients and accurately label specimens to ensure traceability and integrity.
- Knowledge of appropriate tubes, containers, transport media, and storage requirements for different test types.
- Understanding of laboratory procedures for specimen collection, handling, processing, and priority assignment.
- Working knowledge of safety, infection control, and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines and the ability to apply them in daily practice.
- Understanding and practical application of HIPAA guidelines and privacy standards related to PHI.
- Strong customer service skills, including patience, professionalism, and the ability to provide compassionate care in a womens health setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory customers, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read, write, and follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures.
- Demonstrated confidentiality in handling patient information and sensitive health data.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Phlebotomy certification, preferably from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (preferred qualification).
- Preferred two years of laboratory training or experience in specimen collection and processing.
- Geriatric blood draw experience, particularly in clinical or laboratory settings.
- Physical ability to perform light to medium lifting and carrying of objects up to 50 pounds and to carry out required motions such as pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, pinching, twisting, and climbing under or reaching under equipment.
- Ability to visually distinguish color, size, shape, and motility, and to hear audible alarms on temperature-monitored equipment and automated analyzers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Formal phlebotomy certification, preferably through the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is strongly preferred.
- Two years of laboratory training or experience in specimen collection and processing is preferred and will be considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated experience drawing blood from geriatric patients and comfort working with a broad age range from infants to older adults.
- Prior experience working in a medical, healthcare, or womens health environment is beneficial.
- Strong patience and empathy when working with patients who may be pregnant, trying to conceive, or experiencing pregnancy loss.
- Professional demeanor and appearance, with a commitment to maintaining a respectful and supportive atmosphere.
- Ability to operate general laboratory and office equipment, including telephones, computer keyboards, monitors, centrifuges, and manual pipettes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in handling difficult draws, recollects, and time-sensitive situations.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training programs and quality assurance initiatives.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clinic specializing in womens care, serving patients who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or experiencing pregnancy loss. The environment is emotionally sensitive and requires a compassionate, patient, and professional approach to every interaction. You will work in a temperature-controlled clinical and laboratory setting with constant exposure to biological and chemical hazards, following strict safety and infection control procedures. The position involves routine use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, manual pipettes, and temperature-monitored devices, as well as computer systems and telephones for documentation and communication. You may be required to respond to time-sensitive situations and occasional crises, and to operate fire and safety equipment or follow emergency procedures when needed. Physical activities include light to medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulder height, grasping, pinching, twisting, and occasional climbing or reaching under equipment. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., providing consistent daytime hours. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting is expected, supporting a clean, safe, and respectful environment for patients and staff.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
