Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description
The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting clinical laboratory operations by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection, troubleshooting routine issues, participating in training activities, and recommending improvements to workflow. This position ensures specimens are collected, processed, and documented accurately and safely, while providing clear and courteous communication to patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients prior to collection.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity and required temperature conditions.
- Store specimen samples at appropriate temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures and protocols as necessary for transport to preserve specimen quality.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Update patient information and related data in laboratory systems and documentation tools.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries, within established guidelines.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to troubleshooting routine issues in specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service to patients, clinicians, and colleagues throughout the specimen collection process.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (CPT required in Florida).
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting (6 months minimum experience noted; 2+ years strongly emphasized).
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency with EPIC and UChart electronic health record systems preferred.
- Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in a clear and professional manner.
- Comfort with updating patient information and working with computer-based labeling and requisition systems.
- Participation in annual department trainings and ongoing professional development.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow multiple protocols for different specimen types and transport requirements.
Work Environment
This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment with a strong focus on patient care, accuracy, and safety. Two daytime shifts are available Monday through Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, as well as regular use of computers, laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, and electronic health record systems including EPIC and UChart (preferred). Work is performed in a clinical setting that adheres to OSHA and DEP regulations, with established protocols for specimen collection, handling, decontamination, and transport. Professional clinical attire is expected, appropriate for direct patient contact and laboratory work.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
