About this role
Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for critical supplier development, industrialization, qualification, and manufacturing readiness activities supporting rapidly evolving vehicle and manufacturing programs.
The job involves frequent interaction with supplier manufacturing operations, travelling to suppliers across different regions, hands-on problem solving, and on-the-spot critical decision making. The goal is to ensure Tesla receives the required quantities of high-quality processed steel and Tailored Welded Blanks through robust manufacturing processes capable of supporting rapid development cycles, production ramps, and new launches.
- Own the end-to-end industrialization and qualification of TWB manufacturing processes, including material receiving, blank preparation, laser welding, weld inspection, dimensional control, material handling, identification, traceability, packaging
- Ensure TWB manufacturing processes consistently meet Tesla engineering, metallurgical, dimensional, weld-quality, throughput, and manufacturing requirements
- Lead supplier development and problem solving for TWB-related manufacturing issues through launch and serial production, including issues identified during downstream Tesla stamping and manufacturing operations
- Own the industrialization of Steel Service Center operations supporting Tesla production, including coil receiving and storage, coil handling, slitting, leveling, blanking, cut-to-length operations, packaging, identification, traceability, scrap management, and logistics
- Ensure processing methods preserve material integrity, surface quality, dimensional requirements, identification, and traceability of Tesla-approved steel throughout downstream conversion operations
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Welding Engineering, or equivalent experience with evidence of exceptional abilities
- 3+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, supplier industrialization, supplier development, quality engineering, or related disciplines involving Tailored Welded Blanks, steel processing, flat-rolled steel, stamping/blanking, Steel Service Centers, or other high-volume metallic manufacturing processes
- Understanding of weld quality, dimensional control, process parameters, inspection methods, manufacturing failure modes, and the interaction between TWB manufacturing and downstream forming/stamping processes is highly desirable
- Proficient in PFMEA, Control Plans, SPC, MSA, capability analysis, DOE, sampling plans, structured root-cause analysis, and corrective action methodologies
- Proficient in engineering drawing reviews, GD&T, tolerance analysis, dimensional inspection/metrology, statistical manufacturing data analysis, and basic CAD
- Ability to define, structure, and execute complex supplier industrialization projects involving multiple stakeholders, technical dependencies, equipment installations, qualifications, capacity expansion, and aggressive production timelines. Excellent team-building skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate across suppliers and internal functions including Raw Materials, Materials Engineering, Stamping, Design Engineering, Quality, Logistics, and Procurement
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 30–40%, potentially on short notice
