About this role

Cornell University seeks an Equipment Technician III to support equine safety research at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists (CRES), located in Elmont, NY . In this role, you’ll deploy and monitor StrideSAFE wearable sensor technology during live races, ensuring accurate data collection and reliable equipment performance. You’ll work closely with veterinarians, trainers, racing officials, and research personnel while maintaining detailed study records and following established safety and research protocols. This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to an innovative racing safety study while working in a fast-paced equine hospital environment.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Deploying, operating, and monitoring StrideSAFE wearable sensors during live Thoroughbred races.
- Verifying horse, race, and equipment information to ensure accurate data collection and study records.
- Preparing, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting StrideSAFE devices and related equipment.
- Uploading, managing, and quality-checking race data while maintaining accurate logs and study documentation.
- Coordinating with veterinarians, trainers, racing officials, and research personnel to support race-day data collection and study protocols.

Employees working in the hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

- Vocational training beyond high school of at least 1-2 years with at least 6 months of animal handling experience or equivalent combination.
- Eligible to be licensed with the NYS Gaming Commission within 1 week of hire.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow detailed protocols, accurately document information, and maintain data quality.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with veterinarians, trainers, research personnel, racing officials, and the public.
- Ability to troubleshoot basic hardware, software, and technical equipment issues
- Proficiency with computers, databases, and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive research and operational information.
- Commitment to workplace safety and the ability to work efficiently while maintaining safe practices.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including extended periods of standing and walking, repetitive bending and kneeling, lifting and carrying equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Important Details about the Position

- This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
- This is a full-time two-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
- We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
- Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
