Job Description

Are you ready to embark on a rewarding career, as a Probabilistic Risk Assessment Engineer, helping Duke Energy achieve a clean energy future?  Duke Energy’s 11 operating nuclear reactors make Duke a clean energy leader in the electricity generation industry.  Duke operates both pressurized water and boiling water reactors.  Duke maintains a variety of PRA models.  Depending on the plant, these models include Internal Event, Internal Flood, Fire, High Winds, Seismic, and External Flood.

Duke Energy is seeking highly motivated candidates at the Engineer III and Senior Engineer levels to join the PRA Team.  This team is responsible for maintaining Duke’s PRA models and risk-informed applications using fault tree and data analysis (Phoenix,) Human Reliability Analysis (HRA Calculator,) accident analysis (MAAP) among others.

Position Summary

Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of probabilistic risk assessment with general supervision.  The successful candidate is expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of probabilistic risk assessment with little supervision.  The successful candidate is expected to have advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.

Responsibilities

- Provides risk assessment engineering/technical expertise in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine risk assessment projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic / Required Qualifications

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

- One (1) year of nuclear power plant experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree

Senior Nuclear Engineer

- One (1) year of nuclear power plant experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
- Minimum of six (6) years of engineering experience or five (5) years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer

Desired Qualifications

- Registered Professional Engineer
- Experience in the nuclear power generation utility industry, at a site
- Familiarity with the basic systems of a BWR or PWR
- Proficient in engineering theories and principles
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven discipline to develop and adhere to a schedule, timeframe, and meet deliverables/commitments
- Proven reputation for being proactive, looking ahead, identifying potential issues, and developing solutions
- Experience using Probabilistic Risk Assessment software, especially CAFTA and/or PHOENIX
- Experience with Boolean logic development and/or analysis with Large fault trees
- Experience within plant Operations or similar role that required understanding Accident Sequence Progression and the components/systems relied on for various accident scenarios
- Experience with EPRI PRA Tools – CAFTA/Phoenix, HRA Calculation, FRANZ, and/or MAAP
- Experience with the Notice of Enforcement Discretion (NOED) process, Significance Determination Process (SDP), License Amendment Requests (LARs), Requests for Additional Information (RAIs), Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI) and Maintenance Rule
- Experience in Human Reliability Analysis/Human Error Probabilities (HRA/HEP)

Specific Requirements

- Ability to obtain Nuclear Plant Unescorted Access
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty

Working Conditions

- The preferred location is at our Charlotte Corporate office or McGuire or Catawba Nuclear plants; however, the selected candidate may sit at other applicable nuclear sites where space permits.

- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek

- Some work in the plant or travel to industry conferences is expected
