This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressing complex and varied.
Responsibilities:
ONS is seeking a Component Engineer for the Maintenance Support Engineer Team. This position will manage assigned mechanical components to ensure a high level of equipment reliability and compliance with existing programs and commitments. Ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in Turbine/Generator operation, support systems, and secondary side plant operation. This position will report to the Maintenance Support Engineering Manager and have the following duties for assigned components:
- Serve as the site subject matter for the Station
- Monitor and trending equipment performance
- Interface with vendors to ensure repairs and refurbishments are properly managed
- Direct onsite testing and troubleshooting activities for emergent issues
- Coordinate cross functionally with other departments (such as Design, Maintenance & Operations) to ensure concerns, schedules, budgeting and related issues are properly managed
- Ensure regulatory compliance is maintained for NRC and industry standards
- Evaluate Fleet Operating Experience and industry learnings to improve Component performance
- Evaluate Preventative Maintenance (PM) and Predictive (PdM) program performance and recommend performance based adjustments
Basic / Required Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer III - Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
Senior Nuclear Engineer - Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
- 10 years or more of direct Component experience
- Extensive experience with machine vibration analysis and signature interpretation
- Registration as a Professional Engineer
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Experience in the utility industry
- Commercial Nuclear Plant experience
Working Conditions
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek.

Specific Requirements
The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
- 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
- Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
