Position Summary
Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.
This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressing complex and varied.
Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of electrical systems and components with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve.
Responsibilities
ONS is seeking an Electrical Engineer to work within the Operations Support Engineering (OSE) Electrical team. This engineer will play a vital role in ensuring quality equipment reliability and the success of component maintenance and planning activities. A key attribute of the role is to ensure component reliability is consistent with station goals. This engineer will be assigned ownership of electrical systems and/or components of varying complexity. The ideal candidate will have the following skills.
- Experience with the Station electrical systems and components, such as the Switchyard, plant auxiliary distribution system, relays, breakers, and/or switchgear.
- Serve as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) on their assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Coordinate cross functionally with other departments (such as Design, Maintenance & Operations) to ensure concerns, schedules, budgeting and related issues are properly managed.
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic / Required Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer III - Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
Senior Nuclear Engineer - Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Not Technology) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering
- In addition to desired degree, 8 years related work experience
- Professional Engineer - SC
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
- Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
- Increasingly proficient in principles of project management
- Experience in the utility industry
- Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department
Working Conditions
- Some business units may require visits to field sites and/or plants
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek.
Specific Requirements
The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
- 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
- Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
- A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a BS in engineering degree
