JOB SUMMARY

The EMT, Recuperative Care provides frontline health support, monitoring, and emergency response for clients recovering from illness, injury, or hospitalization in Whole Person Care Clinic’s Recuperative Care program. Serving individuals who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness, the EMT helps clients stabilize, heal safely, and stay connected to medical, behavioral health, and housing services.

Working under the direction and supervision of WPCC’s licensed clinical staff, the EMT applies emergency medical training within their certified scope of practice and program guidelines: taking vital signs, responding to medical emergencies, supporting client self-administration of medications, and promptly escalating any change in condition. This role supports CalAIM Community Supports services in a non-independent capacity and follows WPCC policy and applicable California law.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Client Health Monitoring & Emergency Response

- Conduct routine wellness rounds and obtain and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, oxygen saturation) and blood glucose checks as directed

- Perform basic assessments within EMT scope and observe for, document, and immediately report changes in client condition to supervising clinical staff

- Respond to on-site medical emergencies, including CPR/AED, basic airway management, bleeding control, and first aid, and activate 911 when indicated

- Recognize and respond to suspected opioid overdose, including administration of naloxone per WPCC protocol

- Assist clients with safe mobility, transfers, and ambulation; support fall-prevention measures

- Check dressings and assist with basic wound-care support as delegated, reporting signs of infection or deterioration

- Support clients during intake by collecting baseline vitals and health information under authorized supervision

Medication Support (Delegated)

- Support client self-administration of medications in accordance with WPCC procedures and authorized delegation

- Monitor adherence to medication routines and maintain accurate, timely medication logs

- Immediately escalate medication errors, refusals, adverse reactions, or discrepancies to supervising clinical staff

- Care Coordination & Client Support

- Assist with scheduling and coordinating medical, behavioral health, and specialty appointments, and support hospital discharge follow-up

- Provide basic health education on hygiene, wound care, wellness routines, and medication adherence without clinical interpretation

- Participate in daily huddles and interdisciplinary team meetings; share observations that inform client care plans

- Collaborate with Case Managers, behavioral health partners, housing staff, and clinical staff to support integrated, whole-person care

- Use de-escalation techniques and maintain a safe, trauma-informed environment for clients and staff

Documentation & Compliance

- Document vital signs, observations, emergency responses, medication support, and care coordination activities in the EHR accurately and on time

- Complete incident reports for emergencies, falls, and other critical events per WPCC policy

- Maintain documentation in compliance with HIPAA, CMIA, 42 CFR Part 2, OSHA/Cal-OSHA, and WPCC policies

- Support tracking of program metrics and client health outcomes as directed

Safety, Equipment & Infection Control

- Maintain clean, safe client care areas and follow standard precautions and infection-control procedures

- Check, restock, and maintain emergency and medical equipment and supplies (AED, oxygen, first-aid kits, naloxone, PPE)

- Participate in required trainings, emergency drills, competency sign-offs, and onboarding activities

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Required

- High school diploma or equivalent

- Current, active California EMT certification in good standing

- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification

- Meet credentialing and certification requirements as defined by WPCC program guidelines

- Preferred

- Minimum one (2) year of experience as an EMT or in a clinical, recuperative care, shelter, or social services setting

- Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, chronic illness, substance use, or behavioral health challenges

- Training in overdose response, de-escalation, or Mental Health First Aid

- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems

- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

- On-site work at an assigned WPCC recuperative care site

- Regular walking and standing between client rooms and care areas

- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and assist clients with mobility and transfers

- Exposure to clients with communicable conditions or behavioral health needs

- Use of PPE and compliance with OSHA/Cal-OSHA and WPCC safety standards

Schedule Requirements

- Full-time (40 hours/week), variable shifts

- Must be available for assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
