About this role
Laboratory Technician Gas Analysis Job Description The Laboratory Technician Gas Analysis works in one of several analytical laboratories performing routine and non-routine analysis of medical and specialty gases to detect impurities and verify product quality. This hands-on role involves operating advanced analytical instrumentation, handling gas cylinders, and using laboratory software while consistently adhering to strict quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. The position offers exposure to a growing industry, opportunities for long-term employment, and a strong focus on professional development. Responsibilities
- Perform analytical testing of gas samples for impurities using gas chromatography and spectroscopic techniques to ensure product quality.
- Connect gas cylinders to analytical systems within ventilated cabinets, initiate analysis runs, monitor testing, and safely disconnect cylinders upon completion, with cylinder hook-up and removal taking up to 30 minutes per sample.
- Operate and maintain gas chromatography systems, including GC/GCP-type instruments, using Galaxy/Compass GC control software to perform accurate and reliable analyses.
- Utilize Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers to identify and quantify gas components and trace impurities in medical and specialty gases.
- Conduct analysis using CO analyzers to measure carbon dioxide concentration and purity as required by internal specifications and customer requirements.
- Upload, review, and document analytical results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to maintain traceable and compliant records.
- Perform routine calibration, verification, and basic maintenance of analytical instruments to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Analyze finished gas products to confirm purity and conformance to internal specifications and customer quality requirements.
- Calculate, prepare, and fill medical and specialty gas mixtures and pure gases using partial pressure and gravimetric techniques, following established procedures.
- Test and certify incoming raw materials prior to use in production to verify suitability and compliance with quality standards.
- Process cylinders for shipment, including painting, labeling, valve preparation, and generating certificates of analysis, ensuring products are ready for safe distribution.
- Maintain complete and accurate quality control records and documentation in compliance with company policies and local, state, and federal regulations.
- Handle, move, and load gas cylinders as required for testing, production, and shipment while following safe handling practices.
- Participate in all required safety training and activities, and actively maintain a safe, compliant, and well-organized laboratory work environment.
- Apply knowledge of chromatography, peak characteristics, and instrument control to interpret results and troubleshoot analytical issues.
- Use gas handling systems and ventilated cabinets properly to minimize exposure and ensure safe operation with hazardous and toxic chemicals.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, OR at least 2 years of analytical laboratory experience.
- Experience working in a chemistry or analytical laboratory environment with hands-on chemical handling.
- Ability to perform chromatography-based analyses, including operation of GC/GCP-type systems.
- Proficiency or ability to learn and use Galaxy/Compass GC control software for instrument operation and data collection.
- Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, for gas analysis.
- Experience or strong aptitude for working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to manage test data and documentation.
- Understanding of quality control principles and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) concepts in a laboratory or production setting.
- Ability to safely handle toxic and hazardous chemicals while following established safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Strong attention to detail when performing analytical testing, documenting results, and maintaining quality records.
- Capability to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, according to a structured schedule.
- Physical ability to handle, move, and load gas cylinders safely as part of routine laboratory and production activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Toxic chemical handling experience is preferred, including familiarity with safe handling, storage, and disposal practices.
- Experience with gas chromatography control software and GC controlling systems is beneficial.
- Knowledge of peak characteristics and interpretation of chromatographic data supports effective troubleshooting and analysis.
- Exposure to illusion order and related analytical concepts is advantageous for specialized gas analysis work.
- Background as a laboratory technician or chemical engineer is helpful for understanding gas analysis and production processes.
- Experience with partial pressure and gravimetric techniques for preparing gas mixtures is a plus.
- Entry-level graduates with chemical handling experience from school or internships are encouraged to apply.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently within defined procedures.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory and production teams in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment.
Work Environment The role is based in a very clean, organized chemistry laboratory that focuses on the analysis and preparation of medical and specialty gases. Employees work with advanced analytical equipment such as gas chromatography systems (GC/GCP-type), Galaxy/Compass GC control software, FTIR spectrometers, CO analyzers, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), and gas handling systems housed in ventilated cabinets. The position involves regular handling of extremely hazardous and toxic chemicals, and strict adherence to safety protocols, personal protective equipment requirements, and regulatory standards is expected at all times. The work schedule follows a DuPont rotating pattern that provides 24/7 operational coverage, with structured rotations between day and night shifts, including weekends and holidays. The schedule is published well in advance and offers longer stretches of time off compared to a traditional MondayFriday workweek. The environment supports growth and development, with the potential for conversion to a permanent role based on performance, and includes benefits such as eight paid holidays and vacation/PTO, with consultants receiving 40 hours of PTO for every six months of tenure.
