About this role
As an Engineering Technician on the CNC team, you will set the tooling, prove the setup, and run the Grob and Vigel CNC equipment that cut new and existing parts. Working closely with process engineers, maintenance, quality, and production teams. When a tool wears, a fixture drifts, or a part comes out of spec, you find it and you fix it. You document what changed. You train the people who run it after you. You have a proactive mindset, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.
- Set production tooling and run the Grob and Vigel CNC equipment, prove out new and changed processes until the part meets the engineering specification, set speeds, feeds, and tooling, run the trials, and collect the data used to reach Cpk
- Develop, document, improve, and train to Manufacturing Instructions for machining and for secondary processes on castings. This takes intimate, hands-on knowledge of the cut, the fixture, and the tool, and the ability to write critical detail so an operator can repeat it
- Design, manage, deploy, and repair process tooling, fixtures, and fixture components. Keep spares and backups, and own the day-to-day inventory of cutting tools, consumables, and fixture parts
- Diagnose and resolve machining, equipment, tooling, and workflow issues. Cut downtime, cycle time, and scrap. Lead or support root cause on defects at the machine and on scrap found downstream
- Review first-piece and last-piece inspection. Correct the setup when the part is out of spec and bring process changes that need an engineering decision to the process engineer
- Read and use G-code, make controlled edits to programs, offsets, and tool data, and document every change
- Collect and analyze production data (cycle time, downtime, scrap, tool life) and recommend corrective actions, support Kaizen, 5S, and process audits
- 2+ years in manufacturing, machining, toolmaking, or a related industry, including hands-on time on CNC equipment in production, a machining certificate, apprenticeship, or technical-school training is welcome
- A working command of setups, tool setting, work offsets, and running a CNC to a print, proficiency interpreting engineering drawings, CAD models, and GD&T
- The ability to read and use G-code, experience writing or editing programs is a strong plus
- The ability to document a process and train operators and production associates
- Advanced computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software quickly, SolidWorks, CATIA, or CAM experience is preferred, not required. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or 5-Why, and comfort with data analysis in Excel
