Job Title: Medical Assistant (Float) Orthopedic & Sports Medicine / Hand Surgery Job Description
This role provides compassionate, high-quality support to patients in a fast-paced orthopedic and sports medicine practice with a focus on hand surgery. The medical assistant works primarily in the back office, performing patient intakes, rooming, vital signs, chart preparation, and clinical support tasks while floating between multiple locations. The position plays a key role in maintaining efficient patient flow, supporting physicians and advanced practice providers, and ensuring accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate, professional care to patients in an orthopedic, sports medicine, and hand surgery setting.
- Perform patient intakes, including collecting histories, reviewing prior visit notes, and confirming family history and medical information.
- Update and maintain accurate patient records in the electronic medical record system (EPIC).
- Room patients efficiently, ensuring they are prepared for examinations and procedures.
- Obtain and document vital signs and other necessary clinical measurements prior to physician evaluation.
- Perform medication reconciliation to confirm and update current medications in the patient chart.
- Prepare charts prior to patient visits, ensuring all necessary information and documentation are complete and accessible.
- Prepare patient rooms before visits, including setting up equipment and supplies required for exams and procedures.
- Complete prior authorizations as needed to support patient care and treatment plans.
- Restock exam rooms and supply closets regularly, and assist with inventory management to ensure adequate supplies.
- Triage phone calls from patients and physicians, addressing questions or routing inquiries appropriately.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, physician assistants, and other medical assistants to maintain efficient patient flow in a high-volume practice.
- Adapt to working with different physician personalities and work styles, maintaining professionalism and effective communication.
- Support sports medicine and orthopedic hand surgery providers, including assisting with patients experiencing sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, tendonitis, bursitis, concussions, overuse injuries, arthritis, and post-surgical rehabilitation needs.
- Assist in rooming patients for physician assistants, managing an additional daily patient volume as needed.
- Float between multiple practice locations as scheduled, providing consistent support and maintaining continuity of care.
- Contribute to a team-oriented, busy clinical environment by staying organized, proactive, and focused on delivering excellent patient care.
Essential Skills
- Experience in medical assisting; 1 year of medical assistant experience preferred, but new graduates are welcome.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential preferred and graduation from an accredited medical assistant program.
- Comfort working in a sports medicine practice and hand surgery practice with fast-paced office visits.
- Ability to perform patient intakes, rooming, and vital sign collection accurately and efficiently.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, including experience with EPIC.
- Strong patient care skills in an orthopedic and sports medicine environment.
- Ability to complete medication reconciliation accurately.
- Capability to manage prior authorizations and related administrative tasks.
- Strong organizational skills for chart preparation, room preparation, and inventory management.
- Ability to triage phone calls and communicate clearly with patients and providers.
- Flexibility to float between multiple locations and adapt to changing schedules within a 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. availability window.
- Ability to work effectively in a high-volume practice seeing approximately 80100 patients per day in the office.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different physician personalities and a diverse care team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with orthopedic and sports medicine patient populations, including sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, tendonitis, bursitis, concussions, overuse injuries, arthritis, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
- Experience working with physician assistants and managing additional patient volumes.
- Exposure to or experience with Athena or similar electronic systems is beneficial.
- Ability to remain calm, organized, and detail-oriented in a fast-paced, high-volume setting.
- Strong time-management skills to support multiple physicians and maintain efficient patient flow.
- Willingness to adapt to varying physician schedules and clinic demands.
- Comfort working with patients of all ages, including those seeking arthritis management and injury prevention support.
Work Environment
The role is based in a high-volume orthopedic and sports medicine practice that also supports hand surgery. The office typically sees 80100 patients per day, with each physician seeing approximately 2050 patients daily. The medical assistant works under multiple sports medicine physicians and alongside a team of medical assistants, fostering a collaborative and team-focused environment. The position is full-time at 40 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday. Typical hours are around 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional variations such as 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., depending on physician schedules. Availability is required within a 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. window, with no exceptions. The schedule includes working in Bridgewater, New Jersey on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and floating to locations such as Berkeley Heights and Westfield on Tuesday and Thursday, with occasional shifts at other nearby locations as needed. There may be occasional Saturday shifts in the morning (for example, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.). The position includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. The environment is fast-paced and busy, requiring adaptability to different physician personalitiessome working very quickly and others more slowlyand a strong focus on teamwork to ensure that patient care is delivered efficiently and effectively. The practice uses EPIC as the primary electronic medical record system and may utilize other digital tools to support clinical and administrative workflows.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bridgewater, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $28.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
