About this role

Job Title: Field Service Technician Job Description The Field Service Technician installs, maintains, and repairs tolling and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) equipment across multiple field sites. This role combines hands-on work with electronics and low-voltage systems, computer and networking skills, and field-based troubleshooting. You will work both independently and as part of a team to ensure that toll collection and ITS systems operate reliably and efficiently, directly contributing to safer, more efficient mobility for road users. Responsibilities

- Work independently or as part of a team to install, modify, and repair tolling equipment and related ITS systems at various sites in the region.
- Read and interpret toll system schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and design plans to perform accurate installations and repairs.
- Install, upgrade, modify, replace, and maintain tolling and ITS equipment as directed or required by project and maintenance schedules.
- Execute a continuous preventative maintenance program according to established schedules to minimize system downtime.
- Perform reactive maintenance and repairs as needed to restore equipment and systems to full operation.
- Receive, inspect, and verify inventory of equipment and components used for installations and maintenance.
- Monitor automatic trouble reporting systems to ensure timely identification and resolution of issues in accordance with established guidelines.
- Track and monitor repair activities for timely completion and submit necessary approval documentation to appropriate purchasing personnel for payment processing.
- Respond to and resolve trouble reports by diagnosing and correcting equipment and system issues in the field.
- Test toll collection and ITS systems using physical inspections and electronic test and measurement equipment to verify proper operation.
- Monitor, maintain, and diagnose problems with lane control servers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), computers, printers, traffic signals, gates, infrared beams, light curtains, message signs, sensors, cameras, vehicle loop detection equipment, automatic vehicle identification readers, antennas, RF sources, video cameras, switchers, multiplexers, media converters, monitors, frame grabbers, and other industry-related equipment.
- Utilize multimeters, fiber termination kits, hand tools, communication cable termination tools, and test equipment to install, test, and troubleshoot field devices and communication lines.
- Apply computer, networking, and operating system knowledge to configure, support, and troubleshoot field systems running on Linux and Windows platforms.
- Collaborate with traffic management and operations teams to support systems that integrate ATMS, SCADA, and automation for real-time traffic and facilities-related data collection.
- Support tolling solutions that include all-electronic toll collection in free-flow traffic, automated payment at conventional toll plazas, and city tolling systems.
- Work safely in and around roadways, toll plazas, and elevated structures, including equipment located above freeways and within boom trucks.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with team members and stakeholders to report issues, progress, and completed work.

Essential Skills

- 35 years of relevant work experience in field service, electronics, or related technical roles.
- Experience working with low-voltage DC systems; strong understanding of DC circuits used in tolling and related equipment.
- Previous installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting experience with electronics, electrical equipment, or electrical communication equipment.
- Hands-on experience with computer hardware and software, including installation and troubleshooting.
- Practical experience with networking concepts and basic network troubleshooting in field environments.
- Working knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems, including the ability to use and support systems in both environments.
- Proficiency with standard office productivity software, including Office Suite, for documentation and reporting.
- Experience using multimeters for electrical measurements and diagnostics.
- Experience using fiber termination kits and performing fiber optic terminations.
- Experience using hand tools and communication cable termination tools and test equipment.

- Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing complex issues with electronic and electromechanical systems.
- Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision while managing time and priorities effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with team members, operations staff, and other stakeholders.
- Comfort working at heights and in confined spaces, including in boom trucks and on structures above freeways.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Minimum of a 2-year technical degree in Electronics Engineering or a closely related field.
- Bachelors degree in a related discipline is preferred.
- Experience with RF and microwave systems is a plus.
- Knowledge of AC circuitry is a plus, in addition to strong DC experience.
- Experience working with ITS, tolling systems, or similar transportation technologies is an advantage.
- Familiarity with lane control servers, PLCs, traffic signals, gates, sensors, cameras, and related field devices is beneficial.
- Experience with communication equipment, including antennas, RF sources, and video transmission equipment, is a plus.
- Comfort using and learning proprietary software platforms and control systems.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, schedules, and technologies in a high-growth industry.

Work Environment This is a predominantly field-based role in which you spend most of your time working at tolling and ITS sites rather than in an office. You work in a mix of temperature-controlled environments and outdoor settings, including highways, managed lanes, bridges, tunnels, and toll plazas. Some tasks require working in boom trucks and on structures located above freeways, so you must be comfortable with heights and confined spaces. The work schedule will include nights, weekends, and on-call rotations, and flexibility is essential to respond to urgent issues and maintenance needs. You use a variety of tools and technologies, including multimeters, fiber termination kits, hand tools, communication cable termination tools, test and measurement equipment, computers, networking equipment, and systems that integrate ATMS, SCADA, and automation. Dress in the field is practical and safety-focused; steel-toe boots, jeans, and sweatshirts are acceptable attire when working on site. You operate within a professional environment that emphasizes safety, collaboration, and innovation, supporting advanced tolling and traffic management solutions that leverage state-of-the-art technologies such as AI, machine learning, big data, and cloud services.
