Job Title: Project Engineer Job Description This Project Engineer role focuses on supporting field engineering and construction activities with a strong emphasis on project documentation, coordination, and collaboration across trades, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP). The position suits an experienced construction professional who contributes to a restructuring and growing organization by managing RFIs, submittals, and change orders while leveraging solid computer and project management skills. Responsibilities
- Support field engineering and construction operations by coordinating day-to-day project activities with field engineers and superintendents.
- Prepare, issue, and track Requests for Information (RFIs) to ensure timely clarification of design and construction issues.
- Manage, review, and process submittals to confirm compliance with project specifications and requirements.
- Initiate, document, and track change orders, ensuring that scope, cost, and schedule impacts are clearly defined and communicated.
- Collaborate with project management and construction teams to support overall project planning, scheduling, and execution.
- Use computer-based tools and software to maintain accurate project records, logs, and documentation related to RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Coordinate with MEP and other trade partners to support integrated construction activities and resolve field issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts as the organization restructures and grows, sharing insights from field and project experience.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 34 years of experience in construction, specifically handling RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Demonstrated experience working in a field engineering or similar project engineering capacity on construction projects.
- Proficiency with computer-based tools and systems used for project documentation and management.
- Ability and willingness to work with MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) scopes and coordinate with related trades.
- Strong construction management and project management skills, including organization and attention to detail.
- Solid understanding of construction processes, documentation workflows, and field coordination.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively with field engineers, superintendents, and project teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- BG in construction, engineering, or a related field, with openness to a variety of prior project types.
- Experience supporting restructuring or growth environments where processes and teams are evolving.
- Strong communication skills to interface effectively with field staff, project managers, and trade partners.
- Comfort working across different trades and disciplines, especially within MEP-focused projects.
Work Environment The role operates in a construction-focused environment that is actively restructuring and growing, offering exposure to evolving processes and expanding project workloads. You will collaborate closely with field engineers and superintendents on active job sites and use computer-based systems extensively to manage RFIs, submittals, and change orders. The position requires comfort working around MEP and other construction trades and adapting to a dynamic setting where project needs and priorities may shift as the organization scales.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Jose, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $70.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
