About this role
Job Title: Electromechanical Assembler R&D Support Job Description This role focuses on assembling and testing complex mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical components and subassemblies in a regulated, research and development environment. You will work from detailed engineering documentation, support prototype builds and new product introduction activities, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality, reliable products. The position involves hands-on assembly, light soldering, cable building, and continuous process improvement while adhering to strict quality and safety standards. Responsibilities
- Assemble mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical components, subassemblies, and finished products in accordance with engineering drawings, work instructions, and manufacturing procedures.
- Perform wiring, cable routing, soldering, crimping, connector installation, and electrical integration activities as required for each build.
- Read and interpret assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and bills of materials (BOMs) to execute accurate and complete assemblies.
- Conduct functional testing, calibration, and verification of assembled products to ensure they meet performance and quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve assembly and test issues using standard diagnostic equipment, tools, and documented procedures.
- Document assembly activities, test results, and nonconformance findings in accordance with applicable quality system requirements.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies during all assembly and testing activities.
- Maintain accurate production records, including Device History Records (DHRs), travelers, and other manufacturing documentation as applicable.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and actively participate in continuous improvement and lean initiatives.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing teams to resolve production and design-related issues.
- Assist in developing, reviewing, and updating work instructions and assembly procedures to reflect current practices and product changes.
- Support prototype builds, engineering evaluations, and new product introduction activities in a fluid R&D environment.
- Build and assemble cables and electromechanical subassemblies, focusing primarily on mechanical assembly with limited straight electrical work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area in accordance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience with electromechanical assembly, including mechanical and electrical component integration.
- Proficiency in soldering techniques suitable for electronic and electromechanical assemblies.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and detailed manufacturing documentation.
- Capability to read and interpret blueprints, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and BOMs accurately.
- Experience working within a regulated industry, such as medical devices or other highly controlled environments.
- Ability to lift and safely handle items up to 50 lbs as part of routine assembly tasks.
- Familiarity with IPC standards and workmanship criteria, including IPC-610 and IPC-620.
- Understanding of R&D and prototype build environments, including support for iterative design and evaluation activities.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with mechanical assembly tasks.
- Basic troubleshooting skills for assembly and test issues using standard diagnostic tools.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, complete production and quality records.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Formal soldering certifications such as IPC-610, IPC-620, or J-STD-001.
- Experience in medical device manufacturing or another regulated industry with established quality systems.
- Exposure to lean manufacturing principles and 5S workplace organization.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization.
- Comfort working in a dynamic R&D environment where priorities and product configurations may change frequently.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing teams.
Work Environment You will work in a fluid and dynamic R&D environment that is currently in the design phase, where daily tasks and product configurations can change based on project needs. The role is not in a high-volume production setting; instead, you will support research and development activities, prototype builds, and new product introductions. The work involves extensive electromechanical assembly with a strong focus on mechanical components, limited straight electrical work, and a moderate amount of soldering. You will regularly build cables and subassemblies while following detailed documentation and quality standards. The workspace follows lean manufacturing and 5S principles, emphasizing cleanliness, organization, and efficiency, and you should be prepared for hands-on work that may require lifting up to 50 lbs and using standard assembly and test equipment.
