Assistant Professor of Instruction, English Language Arts

The School of Education at Xavier University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Instruction specializing in English Language Arts (ELA), beginning Fall 2027. This position will teach ELA methods coursework within the Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education programs, supporting candidates pursuing initial licensure. The position also provides service within the School of Education, including supervision of field placements and maintaining relationships with school and district partners. This position reports to School of Education leadership. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Primary Responsibilities

- Provide instruction for a variety of ELA education and teacher preparation courses, including elementary and secondary ELA methods courses.

- Advise and mentor students pursuing licensure.

- Collaborate with the Program Directors and Field Coordinator regarding field experiences related to ELA instruction.

- Contribute to the service responsibilities of the School of Education, College, and University.

- Maintain student records and data, ensuring students are meeting program and licensure requirements, and support state and national accreditation.

- Sustain and develop relationships with area schools and districts.

Required Qualifications

- A Doctorate in English Education, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field.

- A valid professional educator license, and the ability to be licensed in Ohio within the first year of employment.

- A state Reading Endorsement, or the willingness to obtain one in Ohio within the first year of employment.

- Minimum 5 years’ related K-12 teaching experience while holding a professional educator license.

- An understanding of and commitment to Xavier University’s Jesuit Catholic mission and identity.

- Excellent organizational, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team within the School of Education.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience teaching both elementary literacy instruction and secondary ELA.

- Experience supervising student teachers or clinical field experiences.

- Collegiate teaching experience.

- Experience with curriculum design in primary literacy and/or secondary ELA.

- Additional credentials such as TESOL endorsement.

Teaching Load, Non-Tenure-Track:

The teaching expectation is 24 credit hours annually for this non-tenure-track faculty position.
