About the team
The Pharmacy team at Peter Mac plays a key role in supporting high quality patient care, incorporating all facets of innovative clinical pharmacy practice. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the pharmacy team provides a comprehensive patient-focused service for all Peter Mac patients, ensuring the safe and timely delivery of all treatments, including clinical trials. With a strong focus on innovation, quality, and collaboration, the team contributes directly to advancing cancer treatment through research and improving outcomes - keeping patient care at the centre of everything we do.

About the role
As a Grade 3 Senior Pharmacist, you will be responsible for developing and managing the efficient provision of outpatients dispensary services, maintaining seamless continual daily operations. In this role, you will not only support pharmacists’ training and professional development plans, including credentialing of staff and ensuring minimum practice standards are met, but also ensuring strict compliance with ongoing and evolving safety regulations, and national legislation and standards.

The Outpatients Dispensary Senior Pharmacist is responsible for

- Developing and managing the efficient provision of outpatients dispensary services, maintaining seamless continual daily operations

To participate as an active member of the pharmacy team to provide safe, rational and cost-effective pharmaceutical care for patients, staff and others by arrangement.

Skills

Essential Requirements

- Qualified Pharmacist, registered with the Pharmacy Board of Australia (AHPRA)

- Highly experienced in clinical pharmacy practice

- Sound knowledge base and experience in oncology pharmacy practice; up-to-date knowledge of systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive care management of patients with cancer

- Demonstrated competency in the following areas:

- Demonstrated understanding of hospital and clinical processes, together with information systems to support and enable these, especially as they relate to clinical pharmacy workflows and oncology services

- Developing and managing the efficient provision of outpatients dispensary services, maintaining seamless continual daily operations, including reviews of the service in consultation with other internal senior pharmacists, leave management and updating relevant policies and procedures impacting practice

- Co-ordinating the daily management of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and other related PBS activity, including generating finance reports and completion of PBS claims

- Management and optimisation of inventory within outpatients dispensary, including resolving discrepancies and having oversight of stock control measures, balancing waste reduction with supply reliability

- Develop and collate data on agreed upon key performance indicators, both at a team and individual level, to inform ongoing service performance and subsequent improvement

2. Workforce Development and Management

- Participating in and conducts performance development reviews for pharmacists in outpatients dispensary

- Following established procedures and guidelines on recruitment and performance management

- Providing orientation and contributing to the ongoing supervision, training and education of pharmacists, including credentialing of staff and assessment of pharmacy competency standards ensuring minimum practice standards are met

- Supporting pharmacists professional development plans and assisting best practice clinical learning, supervision, education and training services are provided to further pharmacists knowledge and competency

- Facilitate performance management discussions in underperforming staff, maintaining transparency to all involved parties in a psychologically safe manner

3. Continuous Quality Improvement

- Monitoring and evaluating collated metrics relevant to outpatients dispensary to drive quality improvement projects, including medication safety initiatives, audits, and accreditation requirements

- Utilising reputable resources to inform and optimise the patient experience, such as patient information and patient dispensing labels, considering the future digital health and feasibility of solutions, which may include assisting the EMR team, as a subject matter expert, by reviewing and advising on aspects of the electronic medical record

- Ensuring strict compliance with ongoing and evolving safety regulations, and national legislation and standards, including collaborating with health care professionals, both internal and external

- Complete incident management reports and respond in a timely and constructive manner

4. Contribution to department and organisation

- Comply with Peter Mac's Code of Conduct, all relevant internal policies and professional legal requirements

- Completion of yearly performance reviews, in conjunction with reviewing and updating this position description where scope of practice has gradually and appropriately evolved over time.

- Assist the dispensing software systems administrator with daily management, maintenance and troubleshooting queries, including user-testing of any dispensing software upgrades

- Maintaining currency in Health, Safety & Wellbeing protocols to strengthen and support the pharmacy departments preparedness and response, including area warden, business continuity and emergency related procedures, such as liaising with dispensing robot service technicians

- Representation and engagement in committees, and working or interest groups both internal, across the Parkville precinct and external to the hospital that are relevant to outpatient dispensary service provision

- Regular participation in on-call and weekend rosters, pharmacy department services including research programs, and continuing professional development activities, internal and external, including presentation at conferences as appropriate
