Structural Steel Field Surveyor
Location: Maryland or Virginia | Field-Based
Job Type: Direct Hire
Pay: Starting at $30/hour, higher depending on experience
Position Overview
We are hiring a Field Surveyor to support structural and miscellaneous steel work throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This position focuses on field measurements, layout, elevations, alignment, and survey documentation to help ensure steel is installed accurately.
The role is primarily performed at active construction sites and requires regular travel and comfort working at elevated locations.
Responsibilities
- Perform field measurements and collect survey information for structural steel projects.
- Establish and verify building control lines, column locations, and anchor rod positions .
- Check elevations, embed placement, and structural alignment.
- Prepare and maintain as-built drawings based on field conditions.
- Provide layout and alignment support during structural steel erection.
- Work with steel erection crews and other trades to maintain proper plumbness, positioning, and structural accuracy.
- Assist with the installation of structural and miscellaneous metals, including stairs, shafts, and related components .
- Operate surveying equipment such as total stations and similar instruments.
- Use Trimble, Bluebeam, CAD, and Microsoft Office for field and project-related work.
- Follow established safety procedures while working on active construction sites.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in field surveying or structural steel erection.
- Experience with surveying slopes, grades, and layout for structural and miscellaneous metals.
- Proficiency with total stations or comparable surveying equipment .
- Working knowledge of AISC standards related to building alignment and orientation.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Able to communicate effectively and work with field crews, contractors, and other trades.
- Willing and able to travel regularly to job sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
- Comfortable working at heights, including aerial lifts and elevated steel floors .
