Course Description:
CPSE 613 prepares graduate students to support autistic children and adolescents in educational settings. The course addresses characteristics and identification/diagnosis of autism; school-based assessment and educational decision-making; evidence-based academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional interventions; consultation and progress monitoring; family perspectives and partnerships; interdisciplinary collaboration; and culturally responsive, ethical, and strengths-based practice. This role emphasizes applying knowledge of autism to the professional roles and responsibilities of school professionals working in K-12 settings.
Required Degree:
Graduate degree in School Psychology, Special Education, Psychology, or a closely related field.
The required degree must be completed by the start date.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with children and/or adolescents with autism, preferably in school or educational settings.
- Experience with school-based, evidence-based assessment and intervention practices for students with autism.
- Experience collaborating with school psychologists, educators, families, special education teams, and other school-based or related-service professionals serving students with autism.
- Knowledge of school-based identification, eligibility, assessment, intervention, consultation, and progress monitoring for students with autism, in addition to awareness of clinical practice and services.
- Previous experience teaching graduate students is preferred.
Duties/Expectations:
The successful candidate will:
- Teach CPSE 613: Autism Spectrum Disorders, in person, 4:00-6:50 p.m. on Wednesdays during Winter Semester, January 6-April 14, 2027.
- Prepare graduate students to understand autism characteristics, development across the lifespan, diagnosis, and implications for school-based assessment and educational planning.
- Develop students' skills in evidence-based assessment as well as academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional supports for students with autism.
- Prepare students to participate in multidisciplinary evaluation, intervention planning, progress monitoring, and consultation with families and school professionals.
- Promote culturally responsive, ethical, family-centered, and strengths-based practices in supporting autistic students and their families.
