About this role

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is seeking a skilled and dependable Research Technician I (Lab Technician) to support scientific research in the Shah Lab. This position is ideal for candidates with 2–3 years of laboratory experience and a strong foundation in experimental methods, data collection, and lab operations. The technician will assist in planning and conducting experiments, preparing reports, and maintaining equipment and laboratory spaces. Work is occasionally directed and provides increasing exposure to complex tasks.

Responsibilities:

- Support research projects by performing experimental tasks under general supervision

- Perform gene cloning into E. coli and Pichia pastoris

- Help with purification of antifungal peptides and conduct in vitro and in planta antifungal assays.

- Help with confocal microscopy and super-resolution microscopy experiments aimed at determining modes of action of antifungal peptides

- Accurately record observations, measurements, and data in the electronic lab notebooks or digital systems

- Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data; prepare summary reports detailing findings and methodologies

- Perform regular maintenance and safety inspections on lab equipment and instruments

- Receive and inspect raw materials; help manage inventory of lab supplies and equipment

- Maintain cleanrooms and workspaces by cleaning and disinfecting equipment and surfaces

- Follow all safety, biohazard, and compliance protocols as outlined by the Danforth Center

- Collaborate with postdoctoral scientists in the lab to ensure smooth lab operations

- Participate in occasional training sessions and contribute to team meetings and discussions

- Other duties as assigned

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

- Familiarity with standard laboratory procedures and research methods

- Basic understanding of molecular biology, plant and/or fungal biology, or related scientific fields

- Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately follow experimental protocols

- Good analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

- Proficiency in data recording, spreadsheet software (e.g., Excel), and lab documentation

- Ability to work independently while also contributing to team-based research

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills

- Willingness to learn and adapt to new lab technologies and techniques

Qualifications

Job Qualifications:

- Associates degree in biology, chemistry, plant science, or related field

- Bachelor's degree preferred

- High school diploma/GED plus 2–3 years of hands-on lab experience
