About this role

SUMMARY:   The Pharmacist working in conjunction with the Pharmacy Director is responsible for pharmacy operations of MedNorth Health Center.

PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (other duties may be assigned)

- Receive medication orders from patients and clinic staff.

- Review medication history utilizing medical record and pharmacy software system, review patient allergies and adverse reactions to drugs, as needed.

- Verify birth date, address and telephone number of patient and update computer file if needed.

- Verify prescriptions to be dispensed from MedNorth Pharmacy.

- Enter prescriptions, both new and refills, and complete medications for dispensing with accuracy while being team- minded and patient service focused.

- Assist pharmacy staff with ordering medications for restock, when needed, and monitoring for expired stock.

- Assist pharmacy staff in putting away daily drug order, if needed, and verify pharmacy invoice for received control medications.

- Maintain cleanliness and neatness of equipment and work area.

- Stock medications in an orderly manner.

- Ensure that pharmacy is operating in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including licensure and appropriate registration of pharmacy.

- Monitor proper storage and usage of pharmaceuticals in pharmacy areas, such as refrigerators.

- Assist pharmacy cashier with register transactions when needed.

- Counsel patients on new medications dispensed and be available to answer patient questions and concerns.

- Ensure that work reflects established organizational standards and procedures, promotes introduction of new and innovative concepts when appropriate.

- Ensure adequate record keeping for pharmacy purchasing, packaging and distribution functions.

- Acts as a consultant to patients and professional staff when requested.

- Check for proper dosage and drug-interactions.

- Check for safe use in children (age appropriate), pregnancy/lactation and specific disease states.

- Determine and record other drug therapy patients may be taking, pertinent lab values, drug allergies and chronic disease states.

- Assess patient compliance, drug effectiveness and adverse drug reactions.

- Consult with health care providers, both verbally and in writing; via the medical record concerning patient drug therapy when appropriate.

- Performs additional duties incidental to work described herein as directed by the Pharmacy Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures as well as applicable law.  Supervisory responsibilities include:

- Pharmacy Technician.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following:

- Upkeep of pharmacy logs as required by law.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required:

- Minimum of BS Degree in Pharmacy.

- North Carolina licensure in good standing.

- At least three to four years retail pharmacy experience.

- Experience in providing comprehensive clinically oriented ambulatory care pharmacy services preferred.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Excellent record-keeping skills.

- Working knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations regarding pharmacy practice.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE :

- Minimum of BS Degree in Pharmacy.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:    Ability to speak English fluently.  The ability to speak other languages is a plus.

REASONING ABILITY :    Must be able to identify a problem, make a decision on one of the possible solutions, implement the decision, and evaluate the results.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS :   Pharmacy, medical terminology, accurate keyboarding skills, ability to process work error free.  Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, photocopiers, and facsimile machines.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS :  Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.   Teamwork and communication skills essential. Treat all patients, co-workers, and managers with courtesy and respect.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS :  North Carolina Pharmacy License.

MedNorth Health Center provides comprehensive health care services, inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, to all individuals; insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer with noise levels of moderate to loud. We serve patients who speak multiple languages and who may need the assistance of an interpreter. In this position one may be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.

This job is a Blood borne Pathogen’s risk C ategory III position.
