Job Summary: The School Counselor supports students in academic achievement, personal and social development, and career exploration. The School Counselor works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and other school stakeholders to help students identify their goals, strengths, weaknesses, and interests while developing the skills needed to become well-adjusted and productive adults
Duties & Responsibilities:
The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:
- Collaborate with students to identify career aspirations and academic goals and provide guidance regarding college applications and career choices
- Assist students with academic planning, accountability, organization, study skills, social skills, and test-taking strategies
- Counsel students regarding personal, social, behavioral, and academic concerns
- Collaborate with teachers to identify strategies to improve student achievement and social development
- Assess student needs, strengths, and areas for growth through individual assessments, conversations, interviews, testing, small group activities, and observations
- Interpret assessments and aptitude testing to support student development and educational planning
- Collaborate with educators, parents, and students to develop, review, and modify Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans for qualifying students
- Promptly report suspected or reported crimes, abuse, or neglect to appropriate authorities
- Maintain appropriate student records and documentation
- Other duties as assigned
Schedule:
- Typical schedule is Monday - Friday: 8:00 - 4:00 (hours may vary based on campus or department needs)

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Thorough understanding of developmental expectations for students of different ages
- Knowledge of student assessments and aptitude testing and ability to appropriately interpret results
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Knowledge of warning signs related to abuse, neglect, and other safety concerns
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and situations
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student information appropriately
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 15 lbs
Education and Experience:
- Masters degree in School Counseling or another counseling-related field preferred
- Related school counseling or student support experience preferred
- Bilingual skills, particularly Spanish, are preferred
