Job Title: Pharmacist Compounding Specialist Job Description
This role focuses on advanced pharmaceutical compounding, including the development of formulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), while providing high-quality clinical guidance to patients and healthcare professionals. The pharmacist will prepare and dispense a wide range of compounded medications, maintain accurate patient and prescription records, and build strong, collaborative relationships with prescribers offices. The position requires a strong foundation in sterile and non-sterile compounding, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to ongoing professional development in key compounding topics.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the skills necessary to safely and effectively compound prescriptions in accordance with established SOPs and professional standards.
- Develop, write, and update formulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for compounded medications, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and regulatory compliance.
- Answer questions and provide clear, evidence-based information to patients and caregivers regarding compound ingredients, dosage, administration, storage, potential interactions, and other aspects of compounded medications.
- Inform patients about the readiness and status of their compounded prescriptions, including mailing policies, procedures, and billing and insurance information.
- Receive oral, electronic, or written prescriptions, orders, and refill requests, verifying that all information is complete, accurate, and appropriate before processing.
- Mix pharmaceutical preparations, accurately fill prescriptions for dispensing, and ensure all containers are properly and clearly labeled according to regulatory and internal requirements.
- Establish and maintain accurate patient profiles and records, including medication histories, and enter prescriptions correctly into the pharmacy system.
- Bill insurance plans appropriately and resolve issues related to coverage, prior authorizations, or claim rejections in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist the pharmacy team in delivering high-quality customer service, addressing patient concerns, and supporting a positive patient experience.
- Assist in maintaining pharmacy inventory, including labels, medications, compounding ingredients, and other supplies, ensuring adequate stock and proper organization.
- Clean and help maintain equipment, work areas, and glassware in accordance with SOPs and applicable standards for sterile and non-sterile compounding.
- Maintain proper storage and security conditions for medications, ingredients, and finished compounded products, ensuring stability, integrity, and safety.
- Safely and effectively compound advanced dosage forms, including injections and infusions, irrigations for internal body cavities, ophthalmic dosage forms, aqueous preparations for pulmonary inhalation, baths and soaks for live organs and tissues, and implants.
- Follow established SOPs consistently and assist with the development and validation of new formulations, including performing and documenting accurate mathematical calculations.
- Effectively communicate with prescribers and other healthcare professionals to clarify orders, discuss formulations, and ensure appropriate compounding and use of medications.
- Convey appropriate and complete information to designated staff members to support accurate preparation, labeling, and dispensing of compounded medications.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of major compounding topics such as infusions, nutritional support, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), veterinary medicine, pain management, and mitochondrial disorders.
- Attend external professional meetings, continuing education programs, and other learning opportunities to stay current with advances in pharmacy compounding and regulatory requirements.
- Interact professionally with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals, demonstrating strong ethical standards, respect, and collaboration.
Essential Skills
- BS in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
- Current, active state pharmacist license in good standing.
- Completion and maintenance of all Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required to keep state pharmacist licensure current, with CEUs in compounding required or preferred.
- Demonstrated experience or training in pharmacy compounding, including sterile and non-sterile compounding practices.
- Proficiency in sterile compounding techniques, including aseptic technique and handling of sterile products.
- Strong knowledge of drug formulation, dosage forms, and compounding pharmacy principles.
- Ability to accurately receive, interpret, and verify oral, electronic, and written prescriptions and refill requests.
- Competence in mathematical calculations related to compounding, dosing, and formulation preparation.
- Experience with maintaining patient profiles, entering prescriptions, and processing medication refills in a pharmacy system.
- Ability to bill insurance plans accurately and navigate prior authorization processes.
- Strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and caregivers.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and record keeping.
- Ability to follow and apply SOPs consistently in daily pharmacy operations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with prescribers and other healthcare professionals.
- Capability to maintain proper storage conditions and security for medications, ingredients, and compounded products.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working as a staff pharmacist in a compounding pharmacy environment.
- Hands-on experience with sterile compounding, including injections, infusions, ophthalmic preparations, and inhalation solutions.
- Familiarity with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) formulations and protocols.
- Exposure to compounding for specialized areas such as nutritional support, veterinary medicine, pain management, and mitochondrial disorders.
- Knowledge of aseptic processing and best practices for maintaining sterile environments.
- Experience with pharmacy certification programs or credentials related to compounding, such as those recognized by NABP or similar bodies.
- Comfort with attending external professional meetings and engaging in ongoing professional development related to pharmacy compounding.
- Understanding of mailing policies and procedures for shipping compounded medications safely and compliantly.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary healthcare team and internal pharmacy staff.
Work Environment
The pharmacist works in a professional compounding pharmacy setting that includes both sterile and non-sterile preparation areas. The environment involves frequent use of specialized compounding equipment, glassware, and pharmacy technology systems for prescription entry, labeling, and billing. Work requires strict adherence to SOPs, aseptic technique, and proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment and workspaces. The role includes regular interaction with patients, caregivers, prescribers, and other healthcare professionals, emphasizing clear communication and customer service. The position involves managing inventory of medications, compounding ingredients, and supplies, as well as maintaining secure and appropriate storage conditions for all pharmaceutical products. Hours and shifts may vary based on pharmacy operational needs and patient demand, and the pharmacist is expected to participate in continuing education and external professional meetings as part of ongoing development.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $115000.00 - $130000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. I have the benefits package and can provide that to recruiters for their efforts.
