Job Title: Embedded Software Developer Job Description
We are seeking an Embedded Software Developer to design, develop, and maintain high-performance embedded software solutions for advanced satellite ground segment systems. In this role, you will work closely with experienced engineers and cross-functional teams to build robust C++ applications on Linux-based embedded platforms, implement networking solutions, and contribute to tools and frameworks that enhance product quality and efficiency. This is a long-term consulting opportunity supporting a major space program, offering the chance to work with cutting-edge technologies in a highly collaborative engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with experienced engineers in the design, coding, testing, and maintenance of embedded software modules using C++.
- Develop and maintain embedded software components with a focus on reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Assist in the implementation of networking solutions, ensuring seamless communication between software components.
- Contribute to the development of software tools, libraries, and frameworks to improve product quality and development efficiency.
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure code quality and adherence to coding standards.
- Collaborate with the team to troubleshoot and resolve software defects and technical issues in a timely manner.
- Support the integration of software components on Linux operating systems and embedded platforms.
- Assist in the testing and validation of software features, ensuring functionality and performance meet specified requirements.
- Utilize cloud technologies to enhance software deployment, management, and operational workflows where applicable.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers and designers, to understand requirements and contribute to technical discussions and solution design.
- Maintain clear, organized, and up-to-date documentation of software designs, processes, and development tasks.
- Demonstrate effective teamwork and communication skills, both orally and in writing, when working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced satellite ground segment software systems to ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Design software with careful consideration for hardware resource constraints typical of embedded systems.
- Write and maintain unit tests to validate software functionality and support continuous integration practices.
- Work within a scrum/agile framework, participating in ceremonies and contributing to iterative planning and delivery.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in software development using C++ with a focus on embedded systems.
- Proficiency with the Linux operating system, particularly in embedded or systems-level development contexts.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts and protocols, including TCP/IP.
- Experience with embedded software development in C++ on Linux or RTOS-based systems.
- Hands-on experience with new feature and new functionality development from start to finish.
- Familiarity with routers, switches, and Ethernet-based networking.
- Experience using C in addition to C++ for embedded or systems programming.
- Knowledge of standard C++ libraries such as the Standard Template Library (STL).
- Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams without direct supervisory responsibilities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to write and maintain unit tests to ensure software quality.
- Detail-oriented approach with a strong commitment to producing high-quality software deliverables.
- Ability to design and implement software that accounts for hardware resource constraints in embedded environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- SATCOM (satellite communications) experience, particularly in ground segment systems, is a highly valued asset.
- Experience with Python for scripting, tooling, or test automation.
- Knowledge of Layer 2 networking protocols.
- Experience with gRPC or similar communication frameworks.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies for software deployment and management.
- Experience working within a scrum or agile development framework, including participation in sprints and agile ceremonies.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as a team player within a diverse engineering team.
- Enthusiasm for learning new technologies, tools, and methodologies.
- Experience in satcom-related projects or systems is considered a strong advantage.
Work Environment
This role is based on site in downtown Ottawa in a modern office environment. The position follows a hybrid schedule, with four days per week in the office and one day (Wednesday) designated as a work-from-home option. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams on a long-term consulting engagement supporting one of the largest space programs in Canadian history. The environment emphasizes collaboration, agile development practices, and the use of contemporary technologies such as Linux-based embedded systems, C++ and C development toolchains, networking equipment (routers, switches, Ethernet), and cloud technologies. Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $70.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
