Introduction to Team

Expedia Group Technology enables Expedia Group to deliver innovative, reliable, and scalable technology solutions that help travelers explore the world and partners grow their businesses.

This Senior Manager Software Engineering Development role is part of the BEX Engineering Home team which sits within our Technoolgy division. The team owns end-to-end engineering for Brand Expedia experiences, including Home, Attach, and Trip Management, while partnering with shared platform teams to deliver differentiated traveler journeys. The main impact of this role is to lead technical strategy and execution that delivers measurable business and traveler outcomes through scalable, reliable software solutions.

You will bring balanced judgment across people, technology, and delivery—helping the team create a truly traveller-centric Expedia experience, make thoughtful trade-offs, learn quickly, and deliver with quality.

What you’ll do

- Lead, support, and grow a diverse team of six to seven software engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback, coaching, career development, and inclusive team practices.
- Own the team’s engineering direction and delivery roadmap for Brand Expedia Home across web and native app experiences, in partnership with Product and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Build strong working relationships with Brand Expression, Merchandising, Design, Product, Platform, and engineering partners across Expedia to align priorities and create a cohesive traveller journey.
- Translate ambiguous traveller and business problems into pragmatic technical approaches and executable plans that help travellers take the next best step in their journey.
- Guide system design, low-level design, API design, data modeling, and architecture decisions, balancing traveller value, simplicity, scalability, performance, accessibility, security, reliability, and cost.
- Champion a traveller-centric product and engineering culture by bringing customer insight, experimentation, data, and feedback into roadmap and delivery decisions.
- Build a culture of end-to-end ownership across design, implementation, testing, deployment, observability, incident response, and continuous improvement.
- Promote high engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, automated testing, documentation, CI/CD, operational readiness, and responsible use of AI-assisted development practices.
- Stay technically engaged through design reviews, prototypes, and production debugging while developing the team’s technical breadth across frontend, backend, web, native app, and platform capabilities.
- Partner with engineers and technical leaders to identify risks early, remove delivery bottlenecks, manage dependencies, and communicate progress and trade-offs clearly.
- Use product and engineering metrics to evaluate outcomes, improve the roadmap, and stop or reshape work that is not creating sufficient value.
- Hire, retain, and develop the talent needed to meet the team’s evolving goals while ensuring opportunities are accessible and equitable.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve traveller outcomes and team effectiveness.

Minimum qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Level; Technical Degree Preferred.
- 8+ years of relevant professional experience and 3+ years of people management experience.
- Experience leading and developing a software engineering team, with a track record of building trust, accountability, collaboration, and belonging.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and technical judgment across system design, low-level design, architecture, API design, data modeling, testing, and operational excellence in distributed or cloud-based environments.
- Experience delivering customer-facing or business-critical software across multiple quarters, from problem definition through production outcomes, with end-to-end ownership of services or multi-service systems.
- Ability to connect technical decisions to measurable product and business outcomes and make transparent trade-offs as priorities or constraints change.
- Experience partnering effectively with Product, Design, Merchandising, Brand or Marketing, Program Management, Platform, and senior stakeholders to align priorities and resolve ambiguity.
- Commitment to developing people through timely feedback, coaching, mentorship, thoughtful delegation, and meaningful career conversations.
- Clear, audience-aware communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics simply and create alignment across disciplines.
- Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products, with a continuous-improvement mindset and a responsible, pragmatic approach to AI across the software development lifecycle.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience building or operating high-scale, highly available, customer-facing web or mobile experiences, particularly homepage, storefront, discovery, search, or shopping experiences.
- Experience and understanding of native app architecture alongside web architecture, including platform-specific trade-offs and the delivery of cohesive experiences across web, iOS, and Android.
- Proficiency with modern frontend systems such as React and TypeScript, including component-based architecture, frontend testing, accessibility, and web performance.
- Experience developing backend services with Kotlin or Java, Spring Boot, and GraphQL or REST APIs.
- Experience designing or operating experience APIs, including server-driven UI or content-composition patterns, downstream service aggregation, and API contracts consumed by web and native clients.
- Experience building modular, configurable, or content-driven templates and shared UI components that enable differentiated experiences to be delivered efficiently and safely.
- Experience designing and operating cloud-based distributed systems, preferably on AWS, with CI/CD, observability, SLOs, incident response, performance, and resilience practices.
- Experience with data stores and integration patterns such as SQL or NoSQL databases, caching, asynchronous communication, and fault-tolerant service design.
- Prior work on high-traffic consumer-facing experiences — ideally homepage, storefront, or discovery. Experimentation (A/B testing, personalisation).
- Experience with experimentation and learning systems, including A/B testing, feature flags, personalization, analytics, or other data-informed methods for improving customer journeys.
- Familiarity with accessibility, internationalization, and inclusive design considerations for products serving travellers across markets and user needs.
- Experience safely integrating and operating AI/ML-enabled capabilities or AI-assisted engineering tools, with attention to evaluation, privacy, security, reliability, governance, and measurable value.
