Job Title: Sales Manager Compact Equipment Job Description
This Sales Manager role oversees the launch and growth of a new compact equipment business in the Southern Maine market, based out of the Scarborough / Portland, ME area. The position offers an entrepreneurial opportunity to build a business from the ground up while working within an established organization. You will lead the sales function, develop the market, build long-term customer relationships, manage an outside sales team, and drive the overall financial performance of the compact equipment sales operation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the sales strategy and growth of a new compact equipment business in the Southern Maine market.
- Manage, coach, and develop a team of outside sales representatives to achieve sales and activity goals.
- Drive targeted sales outreach and new customer acquisition throughout the assigned territory.
- Build and maintain strong, long-term customer relationships in a longer-cycle, relationship-driven sales environment.
- Establish and maintain disciplined sales processes around prospecting, CRM activity, pipeline management, follow-up, and forecasting.
- Hold sales representatives accountable to defined activity levels, performance expectations, and sales results.
- Own the profit and loss (P&L) and overall financial performance of the compact equipment sales function.
- Develop sales goals, budgets, forecasts, and growth plans that align with business objectives.
- Monitor revenue, profitability, sales pipeline, and overall sales performance, and take action to improve results.
- Partner with internal teams to ensure a strong, consistent, and high-quality customer experience.
- Develop a strong understanding of compact equipment products, customer needs, competitors, and the local market dynamics.
- Engage in active customer development and market expansion activities to capture new business opportunities.
- Use CRM tools and Microsoft Office applications to document activities, manage accounts, and report on sales performance.
- Conduct cold calling, targeted customer outreach, and outside sales visits to generate new business and deepen existing relationships.
- Operate with strong process discipline and a structured, repeatable sales approach while maintaining an entrepreneurial mindset.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of professional sales experience.
- Previous people management or supervisory experience leading sales or customer-facing teams.
- Experience working within a longer-cycle, relationship-driven sales environment.
- Demonstrated ability to prospect, develop relationships, and generate new business.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust and credibility with customers.
- High level of discipline around sales process, including consistent CRM usage, pipeline management, and forecasting.
- Strong business and financial acumen, including comfort with P&L ownership and budgeting.
- Proven ability to coach, develop, and hold an outside sales team accountable for results.
- Comfort operating in a highly customer-facing role, especially during the initial launch phase of a new business initiative.
- Willingness and ability to learn a new industry and product offering, including compact equipment.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a strong interest in building and growing a new business.
- Proficiency with CRM systems for managing customer outreach, account information, and sales activities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for reporting, analysis, and communication.
- Demonstrated success in outside sales, including cold calling and targeted customer outreach.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Heavy equipment, compact equipment, construction, or equipment rental experience is a plus but not required.
- Background in equipment, industrial, construction, manufacturing, software/SaaS, or other longer-cycle B2B sales environments is beneficial.
- Experience in account management and customer outreach within a territory-based sales model.
- Ability to operate as a builder with discipline, combining entrepreneurial drive with a structured sales process.
- Comfort with full visibility into and ownership of the sales function and associated financial performance.
- Track record of developing long-term customer relationships and driving new business in competitive markets.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams to support customer service and operational excellence.
Work Environment
This role is based in the Scarborough / Portland, ME area and focuses on building a new compact equipment business within an established organization. You will work in a highly customer-facing environment, spending significant time in the field conducting outside sales visits, customer meetings, and market development activities across the territory. The position involves close collaboration with internal teams at the supporting store location to ensure a seamless customer experience. You will use CRM systems and Microsoft Office applications daily to manage accounts, track activities, and report on performance. The work environment supports an entrepreneurial approach, offering full ownership and visibility into the sales function and P&L, while providing the resources of an existing team and facility. The role emphasizes professionalism in customer interactions and a disciplined, process-driven approach to sales.

This is a Permanent position based out of Scarborough, ME.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $125000.00 - $150000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Milton CAT Benefits. They will also have a very competitive bonus structure.
