About this role

We're looking for an Accountant (CaseWare) to prepare annual financial statements for a simulated portfolio of small, owner-managed companies — from the client's year-end trial balance through to the signing pack. Your work becomes the training data and workflow designs that a cutting-edge AI accounting system learns from. This is a long-term, permanent role working directly with the founder and an AI partner at the frontier of AI development in accounting.

This is not a traditional accounting role. Yes, you will be preparing AFS to a professional standard. But you will also be documenting the steps, decisions, and judgments behind your work — not just the outputs — and helping design and test the AI workflows that follow your methodology. If you have hands-on CaseWare experience, a solid grasp of IFRS for SMEs, and a genuine interest in breaking accounting work into clear, teachable steps for AI to follow, this role is a strong fit.

Why You'll Want to Join

- You will be paid in USD (bi-monthly: every 15th and 30th)
- Paid Time Off in accordance with company policy
- Observance of Holidays per company guidelines
- 100% remote setup so you can work wherever you're most productive
- CaseWare license and AI training provided
- Own a simulated client portfolio and work alongside an AI partner from day one
- Long-term, permanent role at the cutting edge of AI development in accounting where your judgment directly shapes the AI that accountants will use

What You'll Work On

The AFS Cycle, End to End

- Check each client's year-end pack including trial balance, account detail, bank certificates and statements, fixed asset register, and loan agreements, and request anything missing before starting
- Agree last year's signed AFS to this year's opening balances and document any differences and the reason for them
- Match client account names to CaseWare account numbers and lead sheet codes, build the import file, and load the trial balance
- Tie bank balances and interest to the bank's IT3(b), foreign balances to a documented exchange rate, and creditors and income in advance to the client's detail
- Post year-end journals for depreciation from the fixed asset register, deferred tax, prior-year tax adjustments, and client reclassifications, each with its supporting document
- Roll forward the CaseWare file, update notes and comparatives, and prepare the tax computation
- Clear AI partner review notes in writing and update the file
- Prepare the final signing pack including final AFS, final trial balance, adjusting journals, tax computation, engagement letter, and loan agreements for director approval

Building AI for Accounting

- Prepare each simulated AFS to a professional standard so it serves as high-quality training data
- Record the steps, decisions, and judgments behind your work in a way that can be taught to an AI model
- Design and refine the AFS workflows the AI follows, step by step
- Test the AI against your own work, identify where it goes wrong, and help fix it
- Use AI models day to day to map accounts, draft notes, and check your own work, and apply sound judgment about when their output is correct

Ongoing File and Portfolio Management

- Flag turnover above the R2.3m VAT registration threshold when a client is not registered
- Save the final trial balance and journals with the signed AFS and move superseded versions out of the way
- Handle requests to simulated client management and bookkeepers to obtain missing or unclear records
- Rework the AFS when a simulated client raises changes after the signing pack goes out

What You Bring

- BCom in Accounting, National Diploma in Accounting, or equivalent
- 0 to 2 years of experience in an accounting practice including AFS preparation during articles or a learnership
- Hands-on CaseWare experience including file setup, trial balance import and mapping, roll-forward, adjusting journals, and updating notes and comparatives — this is a hard requirement
- Working knowledge of IFRS for SMEs and the Companies Act
- Comfortable with deferred tax, depreciation, and a company income tax computation
- Strong Excel skills including lookups, lead schedules, and reconciliations
- Clear, polite written English for client requests and review responses
- Genuine interest in AI and in breaking accounting work into clear, teachable steps
- Comfortable working with AI models and able to check and challenge what they produce

Nice to Have

- Experience drafting AFS in Draftworx
- Exposure to Xero, Sage, or Pastel client systems
- Experience with independent review engagements
- Registered as a trainee with SAIPA or SAICA, or working towards it

How to Apply

Please include:

- Your updated resume
- A short Loom video (1 to 2 minutes) introducing yourself, describing your CaseWare AFS preparation experience, and walking through your process from trial balance import through to a completed and reviewable CaseWare file

Only candidates who submit a Loom video will be moved to the next step of the hiring process.

If you are a detail-oriented AFS accountant with hands-on CaseWare experience, a solid grasp of IFRS for SMEs, and a genuine interest in shaping how AI learns to do accounting work, this role gives you the ownership, the AI partner, and the direct impact to do your best work.
