About this role
Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
A postdoctoral fellow research position is available, focused on pediatric intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome, parenteral nutrition associated injury, bile acid signaling, microbiome related mechanisms, epithelial biology, liver injury and other systemic processes and diseases. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team studying how intestinal nutrient exposure, microbial metabolites, epithelial signaling, and gut and liver communication regulate intestinal adaptation, barrier function, inflammation, liver disease and other systemic processes and diseases.
The postdoctoral fellow will work across complementary experimental systems, including neonatal large animal models, intestinal epithelial organoid-derived cultures, liver organoid or liver-derived cell systems, human tissue-based studies, molecular and multi-omic assays and others.
Responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will participate in experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and interpretation. Responsibilities may include large animal sample collection and processing, epithelial organoid culture and functional assays, liver organoid or liver-derived cell assays, molecular biology, immunostaining, imaging, quantitative PCR, ELISA or multiplex assays, microbiome and metabolomic sample preparation, bile acid and short chain fatty acid related analyses, and integration of physiologic, histologic, molecular, omics datasets and tasks as required by the lab.
The post-doc will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records, contribute to protocol development and quality control, prepare figures and manuscripts, present findings at laboratory meetings and scientific conferences, and assist with grant progress reports and future grant applications. The position requires close collaboration with investigators in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, pathology, microbiology, immunology, surgery, veterinary medicine, bioinformatics, core facilities, other departments, individuals and labs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD, DVM, or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field, including biology, physiology, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, biomedical sciences, nutrition, or related disciplines. Experience with cell culture, organoid systems, molecular biology, animal models, gastrointestinal biology, liver biology, microbiome research, immunology, histology, transcriptomics, metabolomics, or bioinformatics is desirable. Prior experience with large animal models is helpful.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong written and oral communication skills are important. Candidates with an interest in translational pediatric gastrointestinal and liver research, intestinal failure, epithelial biology, bile acid signaling, host-microbe interactions, inflammation, or organ crosstalk are especially encouraged to apply.
Application Materials
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter describing research interests and career goals, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references.
