About this role

Description

Build the technology that shows hundreds of millions of shoppers what an Amazon Prime membership would actually be worth to them. We want a Software Development Engineer who enjoys large-scale distributed systems and personalization work, where the outcome is measured in members gained.

Prime is among the largest paid membership programs in the world, with members in 26 countries. Most people decide whether to join in the few seconds they spend on a single page, so which benefit we choose to show them, and when, decides the outcome. Our team owns the value messaging across every Prime upsell — every place Amazon offers a membership to a shopper — on Amazon's highest-traffic retail pages, in our mobile apps, and increasingly on channels beyond Amazon, including display advertising, social media, and partner sites. We are building those channels out for new member acquisition first, then across the full Prime member lifecycle.

As an engineer on the team, you will design, build, and operate backend services that personalize these experiences at high request volumes and low latency. You will own what you build from design through production, and work day to day with product managers, designers, and applied scientists to run experiments across countries and turn what you learn into experiences shoppers see within the same quarter.

There is a great deal still to build. We are moving these decisions from rules to learned ranking, and building the tooling that lets a new experience launch worldwide in days instead of months. If you want hard technical problems with a short path to real customers, you will enjoy this team.

Key job responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate the low-latency services that decide which Prime value message a customer sees, on Amazon's highest-traffic pages across 26 countries.
- Build the data pipelines and third-party integrations that carry Prime value messaging to channels beyond Amazon, including display advertising, social media, and partner sites.
- Move message ranking from rules to learned ranking, working with applied scientists on the signals, the serving path, and how results get measured.
- Replace manual launch steps with configuration and tooling so new messaging ships in days, and run the live experiments that tell us whether it worked.
- Own your services end to end: design, implementation, deployment, operational health, and readiness for the traffic peaks of Prime Day and the holidays.
- Start from broadly defined problems and turn them into designs and code your teammates can build on.

A day in the life
No day looks like the last. Most mix heads-down building with the people you build it for: you might open with the health of your services and the numbers from a live experiment, then design the next message with a product manager and an applied scientist. You'll be in code and in reviews, digging into a latency or reliability question, and working with partner teams across Prime to reach customers somewhere new. Because we ship and experiment constantly, you'll see a change you made go live in a dozen countries, then watch data tell you whether you were right.

About the team
We're the team that decides how Prime's value reaches people who haven't joined yet — on every surface where Amazon offers a membership, and now beyond Amazon in advertising, social, and partner channels. The aim is that every customer sees the one reason a membership is worth it to them: their delivery speed, their savings, their shopping. We settle arguments with experiments, not opinions, and we care as much about how a message reads as how the service holds at peak. We're small for the ground we cover, so ownership comes early, and we value engineers who make their teammates better.
