About this role
Purpose. Performance. People.
Joining CPP Investments means joining one of the world’s most admired and respected institutional investors to drive a single mandate: to deliver strong, sustainable returns for generations of Canadians.
With a long-term horizon and global reach, we deploy capital at scale across public and private markets. Our size, stability, and disciplined investment philosophy allow us to pursue complex opportunities and build enduring partnerships worldwide.
For our people, this means meaningful work with tangible impact, real opportunity, and collaboration with exceptional colleagues who value partnership and performance. Here, you’ll contribute to outcomes that matter alongside team members committed to excellence and shared success.
The Role
As a Principal, Sustainable Energies & Infrastructure Credit (“SEIC”), you will play a leadership role in originating, underwriting, executing, and managing credit investments across the energy and infrastructure sectors, with a primary geographic focus on North America. The role will have accountability for transaction outcomes and portfolio performance, while contributing to the continued development of the Sustainable Energies & Infrastructure Credit strategy.
Based in Toronto and reporting to a Managing Director, you will bring a proactive approach to origination, sound investment judgment, and a collaborative mindset. You will develop and manage relationships across the market, and lead and develop colleagues while contributing to the long-term success of the SEIC strategy.
The Team
Real Assets Credit (“RAC”) brings together CPP Investments’ expertise across real estate, infrastructure, and energy to invest in real asset credit opportunities globally. Managing approximately C$12 billion in assets, RAC seeks attractive risk-adjusted returns through proactive origination, rigorous fundamental analysis, and partnerships with experienced sponsors and co-lenders.
Within RAC, the SEIC team invests flexibly across the capital structure, primarily in private, below-investment-grade credit investments. The team invests across infrastructure, renewable energy, and conventional energy end markets. Investments include senior and unitranche loans, mezzanine and holdco loans, preferred equity and structured equity with credit-like characteristics, and, selectively, broadly syndicated bonds and loans.
Accountabilities
- Lead the analysis, underwriting, internal investment committee process, execution, and monitoring of SEIC credit investment opportunities, with accountability for investment and portfolio outcomes.
- Proactively originate investment opportunities and build enduring relationships with sponsors, management teams, financial institutions, advisors, and other market participants.
- Assess credit risk and determine appropriate pricing, structure, covenants, downside protections, and position sizing.
- Evaluate project economics, business models, capital structures, sponsor strength, market dynamics, and key downside risks across relevant energy and infrastructure sectors.
- Perform and manage detailed due diligence processes, including the selection, scoping, and oversight of third-party legal, technical, tax, accounting, insurance, and commercial advisors.
- Direct and oversee the development of detailed financial models, scenario analyses, debt-sizing analyses, liquidity assessments, and downside cases.
- Develop investment committee recommendations and play a major role in presenting investment conclusions, articulating key risks and mitigants, and responding to challenging technical questions.
- Contribute to building a high-performing investment team, fostering accountability, inclusion, collaboration, and talent development while building relationships across Real Assets Credit and CPP Investments.
What You Bring
- A relevant undergraduate or advanced degree. A professional designation such as the CFA is an asset.
- Significant energy and/or infrastructure investment or credit experience, preferably with a focus on North America.
- 8+ years of relevant experience, ideally gained at an established investment manager or investment bank.
- A credit-led investment approach, strong judgment, and an ownership mindset.
- Experience originating, underwriting, structuring, and executing large-scale credit investments.
- Knowledge of project economics and risks, and business models, across a range of sub-sectors, including renewable power, firm power, infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and conventional energy. The ideal candidate will have experience across several verticals, with some specialization, rather than a focus on only one vertical.
- Experience working in deal teams and developing junior talent.
- Leading detailed due diligence processes and managing external advisors.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, management teams, investment partners, and external advisors.
You are motivated to contribute to something larger than yourself, approach complex challenges with rigor, and hold yourself to high standards in a collaborative, performance-driven environment.
We provide colleagues with cutting-edge AI tools, dedicated learning time, and practical support to help them deliver with greater impact.
