Senior Technical Consultant – Functional Safety, Autonomous Operations

Purpose
The Senior Technical Consultant – Functional Safety, within the Autonomous Operations business, reports to the Technical Director of Functional Safety, Autonomous Operations, Americas. The role leads Safety Instrumented System (SIS) and functional safety activities across targeted industries, including the development of deliverables throughout the IEC 61511 SIS safety lifecycle. Key deliverables include Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), SIF SRS datasheets, SIL verification calculations, and SIF proof-test procedures. The Senior Technical Consultant is also responsible for successfully managing and executing projects, leading appropriately skilled delivery teams across Worley’s global offices, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
This role requires strong technical expertise, excellence in project delivery, and a client-focused approach that supports sales growth. The successful candidate will collaborate across Worley Consulting and the wider business to develop integrated offerings for clients in Canada, the United States, and Latin America.
This is a full-time hybrid position based in Houston, Texas, Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
- Participate in designing and implementing automation systems for oil & gas and process industry projects, focused primarily on Functional Safety and Safety Lifecycle requirements.
- Experience in Functional Safety within the process industry including, knowledge of IEC 61511 standard, development of Functional Safety Management Plan, developing Safety Requirements Specification and SIF SRS Datasheets and participation in Safety Reviews (e.g. Functional Safety Assessments).
- PHA/LOPA experience preferred.
- SIS hardware and programming experience across multiple platforms preferred (Triconex, Honeywell SM etc).
- Instrumentation & Controls, and System Integration experience highly preferred.
- Exida (CFSE/CFSP), TUV or similar Functional Safety certification or structured training in functional safety is required.
- SIL verification calculations experience with at least one commonly used industrial software (e.g. exSILentia/ aeShield/ Kennexis etc) highly preferred.
- Experience developing SIF Proof Test/Validation Procedures.
- Excellent communication and listening skills.
- Responsible for leading and managing teams of varying sizes depending on scope, including a mix of full-time employees, contractors and global workshare team to successfully execute projects.
- Responsible for navigating the client decision-making process, involving and interacting with decision-makers and influencers, and overseeing and preparing proposals and contracts.
- Always looking for opportunities to meet customer needs and improve Worley’s financial position.
- Responsible for assisting with sales pursuits, including, but not limited to, sales meetings attendance, assisting in responses to RFP, and conducting short engagements designed to frame a client’s problem statement, plan and sell an engagement, develop client relationships, and demonstrate credibility.
- Strive for continuous improvement in all aspects and actively looking for opportunities to digitally enable how the practice operates.
- Travel as required for various field programs.
Qualifications
- At least seven years of experience delivering projects with focus on functional safety principles and developing and integrating multi-technology solutions.
- Exida CFSE/CFSP, TÜV, or comparable functional safety certification or structured functional safety training.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical, chemical, electronic, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
- Project management experience, with a focus on performance improvement and operations preferred.
- Facilitating workshops, client discovery meetings, strategic advisory / consulting with client is expected for successful work execution.
- Driven, high energy, presence/gravitas, intelligent but practical, people person.
- Excellent analytical and research skills, attention to detail, intellectual rigor.
- Able to interact at any level of a client organization, including Executives and Staff.
- Keeps informed on ongoing technological developments with a keen sense of when evolving technology is ready to be implemented at scale.
- Willing to travel an average of 25%.
