Purpose/Summary:
We are currently recruiting for a Senior Arctic Civil/Roads Engineer for transportation infrastructure in the Arctic and remote environments. The role provides technical leadership for the planning, route selection, design, delivery, and lifecycle performance of all-weather roads, and marine civil works.
The successful candidate will bring deep cold-regions expertise and develop practical, resilient solutions for permafrost degradation, freeze-thaw conditions, drainage, terrain constraints, and remote construction logistics.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the technical authority for Arctic civil, roadway, marine heavy civil, and transportation infrastructure projects.
- Lead project scopes from feasibility and route selection through detailed design, construction support, and asset performance review.
- Develop and review roadway alignments, breakwaters, embankments, earthworks, grading, drainage systems, culverts, and crossings.
- Provide specialized solutions for permafrost, frost heave, thaw settlement, severe freeze-thaw cycling, spring freshet, icing, and climate resilience.
- Prepare and review design criteria, calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings, cost estimates, and construction documentation.
- Lead technical, constructability, operability, maintainability, and risk reviews; identify issues and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Provide technical support during procurement and construction, including bid evaluations, contractor submittal reviews, site support, and resolution of field issues.
- Ensure work meets Worley, customer, regulatory, quality, schedule, and budget requirements, and follows project change management processes.
- Coordinate with geotechnical, hydrotechnical, structural, environmental, social, regulatory, construction, and project management teams.
- Engage effectively with customers, contractors, regulators, Arctic communities, and other project stakeholders, as required.
- Mentor engineers and designers, promote consistent technical practices, and support proposals, estimates, client presentations, and strategic pursuits.
- Travel to remote Arctic project locations as required.
What you will bring:
Technical and Industry Experience:
- Senior-level expertise in roadway, transportation, or marine civil infrastructure engineering, including substantial experience in Arctic, sub-Arctic, northern, or comparable cold-region environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of permafrost engineering, frozen ground, roadway embankments, earthworks, hydrology and drainage, frost and thaw mitigation, climate resilience, and remote logistics.
- Experience with all-weather roads, winter roads, mine or industrial haul roads, public highways, remote transportation corridors, or airfield infrastructure.
- Experience with marine civil infrastructure such as breakwaters and revetments.
- Strong capability in route selection, field investigation planning, design review, technical reporting, constructability, and construction support.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D or comparable roadway design software. Experience with OpenRoads, GIS, and thermal or geotechnical modeling tools is preferred.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and providing technical oversight on complex capital projects.
- Strong client, commercial, proposal, written communication, and presentation skills.
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Transportation, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- Active Professional Engineer license in Canada, or eligibility to obtain required registration through comity within an agreed timeframe. Active Professional Engineer license in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut is an asset.
- Master's degree in Civil, Transportation, Geotechnical, or Cold Regions Engineering is considered an asset.
- Typically 12 or more years of progressive civil infrastructure experience, with significant roadway, transportation, or cold-regions project experience.
- Experience delivering projects in Alaska or other Arctic regions is strongly preferred.
- Recognized technical credibility as a senior specialist in transportation or cold-regions civil engineering.
For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $122,176 to $169,178 CAD.
