About this role
UVA Health seeks a dedicated, full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to provide comprehensive employee and occupational health services. The APP evaluates and manages work-related injuries and illnesses, occupational exposures, medical surveillance needs, and fitness-for-duty and return-to-work concerns. This role combines clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, counseling, and care coordination with program development, staff education, and quality improvement.
Working collaboratively with Employee Health medical and operational leadership and interdisciplinary partners, this APP will promote employee health and safety, support timely access to care, and facilitate safe and sustainable return to work. Services are provided within the APP’s authorized scope of practice, clinical privileges, and organizational policies.
Scheduled hours for this role are 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Holiday hours align with that of our system-wide ambulatory clinics.

Clinical
- Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, counseling, and follow-up for work-related injuries, illnesses, and occupational health concerns.
- Provide timely evaluation and management of blood and body fluid exposures and infectious disease exposures, including post-exposure prophylaxis when indicated, employee counseling, and follow-up monitoring.
- Evaluate hazardous medication and environmental exposures, occupational skin sensitivities, and glove-related dermatitis; recommend treatment and prevention strategies.
- Manage the clinical aspects of Workers’ Compensation cases, including treatment plans, work restrictions, referrals, and coordination with designated partners.
- Conduct occupational medical risk assessments, fitness-for-duty evaluations, and return-to-work assessments that consider the employee’s health, essential job duties, and workplace exposures.
- Provide new-hire and ongoing tuberculosis surveillance, evaluate positive screening results, order and review appropriate diagnostic studies, and coordinate referrals and public health follow-up as indicated.
- Evaluate and treat vaccine reactions and provide respiratory protection medical clearance and other occupational medical surveillance services.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists, physical therapy, and other appropriate services to support recovery and continuity of care.
- Support expanded services, such as commercial driver medical examinations, hearing conservation, and pulmonary testing, as assigned and within applicable training, certification, and privileging requirements.
Professional
-Maintain applicable licensure, certification, clinical privileges, and continuing education relevant to the APP role and occupational health practice.
- Apply evidence-based clinical judgment and maintain knowledge of occupational health principles, workplace hazards, infection prevention, and Workers’ Compensation processes.
- Protect the confidentiality of employee health information and communicate clinical and work-status information through appropriate channels.
- Provide respectful, accessible, and individualized care to employees from diverse backgrounds and occupational settings.
- Educate employees about exposure prevention, treatment plans, workplace health risks, disease prevention, and safe return to work.
- Collaborate effectively with Employee Health colleagues, treating clinicians, Infection Prevention, workplace safety teams, Human Resources, and other organizational partners.
- Recognize situations requiring consultation or escalation and facilitate timely access to additional clinical expertise.
Leadership
- Serve as an occupational health clinical resource for Employee Health staff and organizational partners.
- Collaborate with medical and operational leadership to develop, implement, and maintain clinical standard operating procedures, protocols, and guidance.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives that strengthen exposure response, continuity of care, injury management, and return-to-work outcomes.
- Support coordinated responses to infectious disease exposures, outbreaks, and emerging workplace health concerns.
- Provide staff education, mentoring, and case-based consultation to support consistent clinical practice.
- Help plan and evaluate services as the workforce and occupational health program expand.
- Identify opportunities to prevent workplace injury and illness, improve access to care, and reduce avoidable external medical utilization.
Administrative
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatment, prescribing, follow-up, referrals, and work-status recommendations.
- Prepare clinical documentation supporting Workers’ Compensation care, medical clearance, fitness-for-duty evaluations, and return-to-work planning.
- Coordinate follow-up tracking for occupational exposures, surveillance findings, diagnostic results, and referrals.
- Support occupational health compliance activities, audits, and required reporting in collaboration with designated organizational and public health partners.
- Contribute to monitoring service demand, clinical outcomes, timeliness of care, and program improvement measures.
- Collaborate with operational staff to prioritize urgent clinical needs and maintain continuity of employee care.
- Participate in program meetings, policy review, and service planning.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
Experience: Department and unit specific.
Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Associate) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
The pay range for this role is $116,123.00 - $171,163.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
