About this role

This is a unique APP opportunity that combines oncology, urgent care, and emergency response in one role. You’ll be part of a specialized team caring for oncology patients when they need us most—responding to emergencies and infusion reactions throughout the cancer center while also providing same-day evaluation and treatment for patients with acute needs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Acute care or oncology APP experience, preferably in a high-acuity or fast-paced clinical environment.

Must be a graduate of an accredited PA or NP program with current VA licensure (or eligible for VA licensure)

Experience managing oncologic emergencies, infusion reactions, treatment-related toxicities, and acutely ill patients.

Strong clinical assessment, prioritization, and rapid decision-making skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and unpredictable clinical environment.

Excellent communication and care-coordination skills.

Experience with same-day/urgent care, emergency response, or hospital-based oncology care preferred.

ACLS certification and willingness to maintain competencies required for emergency response responsibilities.

The role offers variety and flexibility in your workweek, with four 10-hour shifts each week and scheduling that aligns with our infusion center operations. This includes a mix of day and evening shifts, with some weekend and holiday coverage as needed. It’s a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment with significant clinical autonomy, strong interdisciplinary support, and the opportunity to help shape and grow an innovative model of acute oncology care.

Administration
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record in compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines.
Participate in care coordination activities, including scheduling of tests, procedures, and specialty referrals.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research protocols as appropriate.
Identify appropriate sub‑specialist consultations as needed.

Professional

Clinical
Perform and document history and physical examinations, analyze clinical data, and develop differential diagnoses.
Provide rapid clinical assessment and management of oncology emergencies and acute patient deterioration throughout the cancer center.
Respond to and manage infusion reactions, including assessment, treatment, monitoring, and escalation of care when indicated.
Provide same-day evaluation and treatment for oncology patients experiencing acute symptoms or treatment-related complications.
Assess and manage common oncologic treatment toxicities, including infection concerns, fever, dehydration, nausea/vomiting, pain, diarrhea, and other acute symptoms.
Determine appropriate disposition and level of care, including continued outpatient management, Emergency Department referral, or hospital admission.
Coordinate care with the patient’s primary oncology team, infusion nursing, triage, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and inpatient/emergency services.
Provide ongoing reassessment and clinical monitoring for patients receiving acute interventions in the OSDC.
Support rapid response and emergency preparedness within the cancer center, including participation in emergency response protocols and stabilization of critically ill patients.
Facilitate timely communication and handoff to the appropriate care team when escalation or transfer is required.
Contribute to the development, implementation, and optimization of acute oncology and OSDC clinical workflows, protocols, and quality initiatives.
Practice with a high degree of clinical autonomy and prioritization, balancing unpredictable emergency response needs with scheduled same-day clinic care.
Leadership
Professionally lead and support other members of the care team in a dynamic clinical environment.
Collaborate closely with physician and advanced practice leadership to optimize workflow, quality, and patient outcomes.
Model high standards of clinical practice, communication, and teamwork.
Actively engage in process improvement and quality improvement initiatives.

Individual contributors with responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty. Typically involves diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients, and often include face-to-face interactions with patients. May also spend some time designing and implementing clinical programs, policies, and services using specialized knowledge and skills. Specialty license or certification required which is acquired through advanced education, training and/or experience. This career stream will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory technologist jobs. ​

Requires broad knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and require vocational or technical education. ​ Works under limited supervision for routine situations. ​ Provides assistance and/or may lead and training to lower-level employees. ​ Problems typically are not routine and require analysis to understand. ​ May lead daily operation activities.​

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Associate) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $116,123.00 - $171,163.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
