Start Your Career with Purpose

At GE HealthCare, we are investing in the future pipeline of Field Service Engineers through our structured two-year Early Career Talent development programme.

As an Early Career Talent (ECT) Field Service Engineer, you will join us on a two-year fixed-term contract and be assigned to a regional Service Area in Scotland, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, London or Bristol. You will develop the technical, practical and customer-service skills needed to maintain and repair medical technology used in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

This is a hands-on, field-based opportunity for someone who is curious about technology, enjoys understanding how things work and takes a practical approach to solving problems. Through formal technical and product training, supervised field experience, structured learning and support from experienced Field Service Engineers, you will progressively build the knowledge, confidence and capability needed for a career in Field Service.

Job Description

Early Career Talent (ECT) Field Service Engineer

Field Roles:  ECT Field Service Engineer

Job Family Group:  Services

Job Family:  Leadership and Pipeline Programs

Job Profile:  Early Career Trainee  (new profile)

Locations: Scotland, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, London and Bristol
Contract: Two-year fixed-term contract
Programme: Two-year Early Career Talent development programme
Planned start date: 1st December 2026

Throughout the programme, you will contribute to the reliable operation of equipment that supports patient care while developing your skills in fault-finding, maintenance, customer service, safety, quality and compliance.

Depending on your existing qualifications and development needs, you may be required to complete a company-supported BTEC in Electronics or another relevant technical qualification as part of the programme.

Successful completion of the programme may lead to consideration for a Field Service Engineer opportunity, subject to satisfactory performance, completion of the required training and qualifications, demonstrated competence and an available business position. Any future appointment would be subject to a separate recruitment and offer process.

Your Responsibilities

Initially working under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers, you will develop the capability to:

- support planned preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on medical equipment;
- assist with equipment testing, calibration, installation and configuration;
- follow a structured and methodical approach to fault-finding and troubleshooting;
- use tools, test equipment, technical documentation and diagnostic systems safely and effectively;
- support customer issues from allocation through to resolution, escalating when additional technical support is required;
- work alongside experienced engineers at hospitals and other customer locations;
- communicate clearly and professionally with customers, hospital staff and internal teams;
- keep customers informed of progress and next steps;
- maintain accurate service records, including work completed, time spent and parts used;
- complete required administration, including service debriefs, timesheets, expenses and training records;
- participate fully in technical training, study, workplace learning and assessments; and
- follow all safety, quality, regulatory, data privacy and company requirements.

As your knowledge and competence develop, you will take on increasing responsibility and work with greater independence, while continuing to seek guidance and escalate matters where appropriate.

What We Are Looking For

You do not need previous experience as a Field Service Engineer. We are looking for someone with technical curiosity, practical aptitude and a genuine willingness to learn.

You will ideally demonstrate:

- an interest in electrical, electronic, mechanical, electromechanical or computer-based systems;
- curiosity about how equipment works and why technical faults occur;
- some practical, hands-on experience gained through education, employment, volunteering, hobbies or personal projects;
- confidence using basic tools, or the aptitude and willingness to develop this skill;
- a logical and methodical approach to problem-solving;
- the ability to follow technical and safety instructions carefully and accurately;
- strong attention to detail;
- a proactive and responsible approach to learning;
- good organisation and time-management skills;
- clear and professional verbal and written communication;
- the ability to build positive working relationships with customers and colleagues;
- a calm and respectful approach when dealing with unexpected problems or customer concerns;
- basic IT skills; and
- a strong commitment to safety, quality and compliance.

Relevant hands-on experience could include working with cars, motorcycles, bicycles, computers, electronics, domestic equipment, machinery, repairs, maintenance or technical projects.

This experience does not need to have been gained through formal employment. We are interested in your practical ability, technical curiosity and potential to learn.

Qualifications

We welcome applications from candidates with a relevant technical qualification, practical background or demonstrable technical aptitude.

Relevant qualifications may include:

- a BTEC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering;
- an HNC or HND in an engineering discipline;
- an engineering, maintenance, electrical or electromechanical apprenticeship;
- T Levels, A Levels or equivalent qualifications containing relevant technical subjects;
- a degree in engineering, electronics or another related technical discipline;
- another relevant technical or vocational qualification; or
- equivalent practical technical experience and aptitude.

Previous experience in healthcare engineering is not required.

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, you must have:

- a full and valid driving licence permitting you to drive in the UK by the programme start date of 2 November 2026 . This is essential because the role involves regular independent travel to hospitals and other customer sites;
- the ability and willingness to drive regularly and independently across your assigned regional Service Area;
- flexibility to travel in line with customer, operational and training requirements;
- willingness and ability to attend training at other UK locations and, where required for the programme, overseas;
- the ability to stay away from home occasionally for training or operational requirements;
- the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the fixed-term contract; and
- the ability to understand technical training and safety instructions and communicate clearly and effectively with customers and colleagues in English, both verbally and in writing.

What Field-Based Working Means

This is a mobile, field-based role rather than a fixed-site or office-based position. You will spend a significant proportion of your working time travelling to and working at hospitals and other customer locations.

Journey times will vary depending on regional geography, customer demand, operational priorities, customer locations and your home location. Some journeys may be significant.

You should be comfortable with:

- regular independent driving;
- working at different customer locations;
- organising your working day around customer and training requirements;
- occasional early starts or later finishes;
- changes to planned activities when urgent customer needs arise;
- occasional overnight stays; and
- attending technical training away from your home location.

These requirements will be managed in accordance with the applicable employment terms, working-time requirements and company policies.

Training and Support

Throughout the programme, you will receive:

- a structured development plan;
- formal technical and product training;
- supervised field experience;
- coaching and mentoring from experienced Field Service Engineers;
- regular feedback and development discussions;
- access to technical documentation and diagnostic tools;
- support towards a relevant technical qualification, where applicable; and
- opportunities to develop your technical capability and confidence progressively.

You will not be expected to undertake work independently until you have completed the required training, demonstrated the appropriate level of competence and received the necessary authorisation.

What We Will Provide

You will be provided with the equipment needed to undertake the role, including:

- a company vehicle;
- a laptop and mobile phone;
- an appropriate toolkit;
- uniform and personal protective equipment; and
- access to relevant service documentation and technical systems.

The company vehicle will be provided and managed in accordance with the applicable company vehicle policy.
