The Role
We’re recruiting for a Senior C#/.NET Software Developer here in the Performance Hub team at Justice Digital, Data and Science We currently have over 200 experienced developers who make up the engineering community across the MoJ. You will coach and mentor junior colleagues and take part in informal support networks with your peers. You will be encouraged to play an active role in the engineering community and culture.
You’ll be confident working with other developers on our tech stack and comfortable learning new technologies and systems.
As an example, you could be:
- Migrating applications from legacy frameworks to modern, robust versions of .NET
- Working on React applications interacting with .NET web APIs
- Supporting a product which provides public access to data related to the Justice system
You will work with user researchers, product managers, designers, delivery managers, technical architects and content specialists who share a vision for improving government through smarter use of technology.
Our Tech Stack
We use a range of technologies and we’re looking for people who have experience in building web applications or back-end systems in an object-oriented language, and love learning new languages and frameworks.
We use C# to write our application code, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, Sentry for application monitoring, AWS and Docker to schedule and run our services (read about our Cloud Platform ), AWS for most of our infrastructure, and GOV.UK Design System and MoJ Design System for our web interfaces and use MacBook Pros.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior C#/.NET Software Developer at the MoJ, you will have a number of responsibilities. These include:
Technical
- Expert knowledge of C# and the .NET programming language, CSS/HTML
- Revise, refactor, update, and debug code
- Create procedures for running .NET applications
- Collaborate with internal teams to design, create and maintain software
- Create documentation throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC)
- Test and deploy prototypes, applications, systems, user interfaces and client displays
- Securely designing, building and maintaining APIs, services and systems
- Working on pre-existing codebases
- Improving the resilience and stability of software
- Applying practices to enable continuous delivery
- Familiarity with the .NET framework and architectural/design patterns such as Model-View-Controller (MVC)
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban
- Understanding database applications, such as SQL Server, and PostGres
- Cloud expertise (Google Cloud, Amazon AWS, and Microsoft Azure), including knowledge of cloud design patterns and cloud-native architectures

Salary Information**
Base salary for this role is from:
National: £58,511- £65,329
London: £63,343 - £70,725
- New entrants to the Civil Service joining the MoJ are expected to start at the minimum of the pay band.
- Existing Civil Servants moving on a level transfer will retain their current base salary or move to the minimum of the pay band for the role, whichever is higher.
- Existing Civil Servants who are promoted will either move to the bottom of the new grade’s pay band or receive a 10% uplift, whichever provides the greater increase.
- Candidates may also be eligible for a non‑pensionable Government Digital & Data Allowance of up to £10,532 per year (London) or £10,639 (National). This is a temporary allowance, reviewed annually and may be retained, amended, or withdrawn.

Stage 2 - Interviews:
Successful candidates who meet the required standard will then be invited to a panel interview held via Microsoft Teams. At interview stage, you will be assessed against the following Success Profile elements - Experience, Technical and the following Behaviours:

Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles: All successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale. This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map . All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).
For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Flexible working hours
