Position Summary

The Journeyman - Welder (Shop) fits and welds commercial mechanical piping and assemblies using approved welding processes on commercial mechanical piping and fabricated assemblies. The role follows approved welding

procedures, project specifications, and quality requirements while supporting safe, productive field or shop operations. This position reports to the Shop Foreman - Piping.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Review isometric drawings, weld maps, specifications, and work packages before fabrication or installation.

• Prepare joints, verify fit-up, select consumables, and weld in accordance with approved welding procedure specifications.

• Inspect welds visually, identify defects, and complete repairs in accordance with quality procedures.

• Coordinate fit-up, rigging, supports, access, purge requirements, and sequencing with pipefitters and field leaders.

• Maintain leads, machines, torches, grounds, ventilation, fire prevention, and hot-work controls in safe condition.

• Document weld identification and support nondestructive examination, pressure testing, and turnover records.

• Mentor apprentices and less-experienced team members in safe work practices and basic welding preparation.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• At least 3 years of commercial pipe welding or closely related industrial welding experience.

• Ability to pass project- or company-required weld qualification tests before performing production welding.

• Ability to read piping isometrics, welding symbols, specifications, and procedure requirements.

• Knowledge of hot-work permits, fire-watch requirements, compressed gases, ventilation, and welding PPE.

• Ability to work at heights, in mechanical rooms, and in other physically demanding construction environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current ASME Section IX or other relevant welder performance qualifications.

• Experience with orbital welding, brazing, stainless steel, medical gas, or high-purity systems, as applicable.

• OSHA 30-hour Construction credential and current lift certifications.
